EPILOGUE

Iwalked around numerous places in Armenia and saw the desolate, marvellous and splendid monasteries, solitudes and venerable recluses’ cloisters – all dressed in black and resembling the sky – in the gorges and valleys

abounding in flowers.

I [saw our] celebrated princes’ semi-ruined and strong fortresses in the caves of the gorges and on the tops of the mountains. [I saw] the provinces and settlements, the ruins of the renowned and rich cities covered in gloom [and sadness] under a mourning veil. And what? Is this a happiness for me? No! This is an incurable wound and an irremediable pain, for those sacred places – though covered with moss – are still struggling against the cruel time, are still receiving its merciless, ruthless and deadly blows, and – completely helpless – still endure expecting only God’s help.

Those unhappy ruins still exist without their constructors; the solitudes without the hermits, the cloisters without the recluses; the fortresses without the garrisons; the provinces and settlements without their masters… They passed, they flew like an arrow shot by the powerful hand of the Time and buried the whole beauty of the Armenian world under the dust of oblivion with them.

Dressed in black, Armenia calls its visitors and envelops them in an inconsolable grief. Holding the praiseworthy godliness of the men of the past as an undeniable testimony, it praises the formers and laments the latter, saying, “There was a time when I was a graceful bride beautifully adorned in the light of glory, and now I am a lonely widow. There was a time when I was a mother rejoicing with her sons, and now I am a mourner. Where is my entire grandeur and my bridal adornments? The crescent, the bracelet, the armlet, the gown and the ornament with golden embroidery… Where are they? The merciless enemies robbed them, and they still remain irredeemable.

“There was a time when my own temples of the glory of God’s holiness were a dwelling-place for the angels, but now they are a lair for beasts; they used

654

to be people’s caravan, and now they are a resting place for herbivores; they used to be a place of worship, and now they are a pen of flocks and astable. The sky was bejewelled and decorated with stars and my monasteries with venerable monks. The sky is still luminous, but I lost my [magnificence] forever.

“My fugitive sons and grandsons were born and nurtured under foreign stars. That is why they forgot and forget me. Still, it wasn’t so hard for me, as I knew that the violence expelled them, and I could endure a little. But woe is me, the miserable mother, for I was severely wounded when they were unfairly taken away from my bosom! Did a miserable mother deserve that her wounded and grief-stricken sons were seized from her bosom, that they were made to finally denounce their true parent and were oppressed, vexed and humiliated instead of being comforted from the inconsolable exiles and given remedy against their deep wounds? And then this reproachable act was considered a service to God.

“But now, I am being completely consoled, for the cool dew of the north, mingling with the southern heat, wishes to make me fertile and mend my state every day. From now on, my sons can be consoled from the grievous sorrow and many-years-long sufferings, and they may gather under the protecting arms of the loving mother. This will certainly happen if they have love and unity, if their faith in God and their actions are firm and reach the former level, if the monasteries become schools and places of thought again; if those educated abroad– garbed and adorned with foreign clothes – do not return with swords to hurt me and my apostolic tradition; if everyone is educated in accordance to the virtues of God rather than decorated with ethereal, respiratory and diabolic sciences; if that [blow] vanishes from God’s home; if those drumming on their patrimonial laws and rules disappear completely.[And] at last, if KhorenatsiMovses appears and writes the opposite of the Lamentation. This is when I, the miserable mother, will have a hope for revival. And if not, I am dived and will be dived [deeper] from misery into a [deeper] misery and from sorrow into sorrow. After this, I will certainly kiss the death.”

This is what the grief-stricken Armenia said and immediately retreated into silence squeezing drops of tears from her eyes.
