THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The United States is almost three thousand miles across from north to south.
Along the Atlantic coast the land is flat and there are many good harbours where large cities have grown up.
In the northern part of the country the ground is stony and not very good for farming. In the southern part the land is good for farming, the climate is quite warm and tobacco, cotton, rice, oranges, lemons and other fruits grow well in the warm and sunny state of Florida.
The Vikings visited the continent of North America almost a thousand years ago, but they did not try to settle the land. It was discovered only when Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492. Columbus was looking for the Far East, he knew that the world was round and he could reach India and Japan by sailing west. He didn't know that the big continents of North and South America blocked the way. Columbus died believing that he had found the Far East and never understood that he had discovered new continent.
The first English colony started in 1601. By 1732 England had several colonies along the Atlantic coast. Although people from many other countries had come to live in these colonies most of the settlers were English and brought to the new land the English language, culture, and customs.
During the next century roads were built and the colonies began to trade with each other. They began to forget that they belonged to England which was far on the other side of the ocean. But when George III became King of England he passed a law regulating trade between the colonies and England, and the colonists had to pay new taxes. They did not want to pay taxes and declared their independence. On July 4, 1776 men from each colony came to Philadelphia in order to meet in the Continental Congress. This Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.
After six years of fighting the United States won its freedom from England and became a new country. George Washington led the army and he was elected the new country's first president.
