Multi-drug Resistant Organisms
Multi-drug resistant organisms include methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE). In nursing homes, MRSA may cause skin, wound, urinary tract and respiratory infections. VRE is found in the intestinal tract; both antibiotic resistant strains can spread on the hands of health care workers or from skin to skin contact with infected patients.
Skin Infestations
Scabies is a skin infestation caused by the sarcopties scabiei itch mite, which burrows under the skin and causes bumpy, red rashes and intense itching. It sometimes proves difficult to diagnose scabies, because it often gets mistaken for other skin conditions. The eggs of the mite can transmit from person to person by close and skin to skin contact. Nursing home staff can help to avoide outbreaks by taking measures to treat the affected patient and those who in close proximity to them in a timely manner, according to the CDC.
