Part1. Personal hygiene

"Germs are nothing without a breeding ground."

Louis Pasteur

Text 1. What is Personal Hygiene?

Personal hygiene is the basic concept of caring for our bodies. Good personal hygiene is essential in reducing the risk of infection from pathogenic micro-organisms (germs), mainly by limiting person-to-person contamination. Pathogenic micro-organisms include bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Viruses are pieces of nucleic acid wrapped in a thin coat of protein that replicate only within the cells of living hosts. Bacteria are one-cell microorganisms with a simple cellular organization whose nucleus lacks a membrane. Parasites may be protozoa, yeasts, or multi-cellular organisms such as fungi or worms that live in or on a host to obtain nourishment without providing any benefit to the host. It would be untrue to say, however, that to humans, all viruses, bacteria and fungi are aggressive and invasive. In fact, the human body is a host to a huge number of germs that make up “commensal flora". Personal hygiene should therefore maintain a balance between limiting person-to-person contamination by pathogenic organisms and preserving the microbiological flora in, on and around us.

When we are talking about personal hygiene we mean caring for our skin and mucous because they are two areas of our body which are breeding grounds for many varied microbes.

Skin is the best protection of the body against outside dangers. It acts as a barrier against chemical, physical and microbiological changes in its environment. It harbors rich and varied microbial ecosystem that plays an essential balancing role in the body.

Mucous are membranes which cover the cavities of an organism which are permanently moist. Their composition, temperature, secretions and pH levels vary according to where they are, e.g. mouth, nose, eyes, genitals, etc., but all are a very good place for microbes in the body.

Good personal hygiene is vital to good health. Personal cleanliness should be part of your regular daily routine. If you start to neglect your personal hygiene, this could lead to health problems. Good personal hygiene will reduce your risk of a disease and will also help prevent you from infecting others.
