A: You are a student of the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, aren't you? My congratulations!
K: Thank you. I am really very, very happy!
A: But you were going to enter Oxford University, weren't you?
K: Right you are. But the cost of studies is very high there.
A: By the way, how much does it cost?
К: It depends on the faculty and the year you are in.
A: How much is the agricultural course?
K: It's about £2500.
A: Is it the most expensive?
К: No, it's not. The Clinical Medical Course is. It is £6000. By the way, it increases with every academic year as a result of inflation. So I made up my mind to Center the Academy.
A: Do you have to pay at the Academy?
K: No, here I don't pay, and I even get a scholarship
A: I see. I'm glad to see you here. I think you'll make many friends at the Academy.
K: Sure. I have already made some friends.
5. 6 Complete the dialogue:
A: Hello. Kate. Would you like to come with me?
K: ...
A; To a very nice place in Oxford?
K: ...
A: It will take us 15-20 minutes to get there by bus.
K: ...
A: We'll stay there not more than two hours because I have an appointment at 5.
K: ...
А: I'm going to get some material on Darwin's travelling on the Beagle.
K: ...
А: I'm to make a report at the scientific conference next Monday.

1. What is your field of science (what is your narrow specialist)?
2. Is biology a board science?
3. What are the subdivisions of biology?
4. What branches of biology are new (old)?

7. Is protein a biologically active substance?
8. What departments are there at your faculty?
9. Is there any museum at the faculty?
Have you ever been t» the Botanical Garden?
What does space biology study?
6. 3 Read the text and then answer the questions:
Biology is a very old and broad science. It is as old as man himself. It studies different living things and living system, so biology is the science of life. The word "biology" comes from two Greek words, "bio" - life and "logos" - study.
This science is concerned with nature, reproduction of living organisms and their place in the environment. Biology is closely connected with other natural sciences such as; geology, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics.
There are many branches of biology: zoology, botany, genetics, biophysics, biochemistry, microbiology and many others. Some branches are old, for instance, botany, zoology; others are new, such as genetic engineering, space biology, etc.
Biologists all over the world do their best to solve many problems concerning health and food for all human beings. But the most difficult question for biologists is the classification of living things. The first man who tried to make such classification was Aristotil. Karl Leneus added much to this classification and we still use it. Here is that classification: 1. phylum, 2. class, 3. order, 4. family, 5. genus, 6. species.
At present ecological problems are of great importance, because the life on the Earth depends on whether we shall take timely measures to present ecological catastrophe.
It is a well-known fact that Russian scientists have made great contributions to biology. They have done a great deal in the field of selection, in irradicating many serious diseases, in discovering a number of important principles in the activity of the brain and in obtaining important data on the higher nervous activity. They have evolved a theory on mutual relationship between the cerebral cortex and the internal organs. Russian scientists were the first to develop an apparatus for artificial circulation of blood. The creation of microbiological industry is the crown of scientific thought. It makes it possible to obtain various physiologically active substances: enzymes, vitamins, hormones, antibiotics, amino-acids and also protein for human and animal consumption.
