Imagine you're going on a trip around the world! Make a schedule for your trip, showing where you will visit. Make a list of some things you'll need for each place.
Retell the following story.
A FORGETFUL TOURIST
Once a tourist arrived in London. When he got off the train, he asked the porter to show him the way to the nearest post office. He sent a telegram to his wife, informing her that he had arrived safety and giving her the address of the hotel he intended to stay.
Then he went to the hotel, left the luggage there and went for a walk. As it was his first visit to the English capital, he was very much interested to see the museums and the sights of this beautiful city.
He strolled about a bit, had dinner at a small restaurant and looked at the shops. When he felt tired and wanted to turn his steps back to the hotel he suddenly realized that he didn't remember its name or even what street it was in.
Suddenly he remembered the telegram which he had sent to his wife on his arrival. She knew his address and could help him.
So a late hour his wife received this extraordinary telegram: "Please, send me my address at once."
22. Have you ever been abroad? Read the text about Stratford and speak about any foreign city you like.
Stratford is a very interesting town, rigid in the centre of England. You can't get very far from the sea anywhere in England, but Stratford is about the farthest point you can get from it. It's nice to think that Shakespeare was born right in the heart of England and in the midst of the country that is so typically English. There are no mountains or deep valleys near Stratford, but there are beautiful woods, green fields, a quiet gentle river - the winding Avon - and lovely houses, black and white with thatched roofs.
The first place we went to was Shakespeare's Birthplace, a small house with small rooms where Shakespeare was born. Lots of people who had visited the house had written their names on the walls. It seemed a wrong thing to do although among the names were Walter Scott, C. Dickens, Thackeray and Browning.
Then we went to the church where W. Shakespeare was buried. There's a bust of Shakespeare that was carved by a Dutch sculptor and on the stone of Shakespeare's grave are the lines: Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear To dig the dust enclosed here. Blest be the man that spares these stones And curst be he that moves my bones.
We had a look at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, built on a rather plain practical lines. I wish we could have seen a play there.
23. It is interesting to know that...
The oldest museum in the world is the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England built in 1679-1683. Since 1924 it has housed an exhibition of scientific instruments.
The largest complex of museums is Washington, D. C.'s Smithsonian Institution comprising 13 museums. The most popular museum in numbers of visitors is the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum which opened in July, 1976. On one day in 1984 the door had to be closed when 118,437 people crowded in. The total attendance at the Smithsonian is about 24 million per year.
