BUILDING MATERIALS

Building materials are divided into some groups: Main building materials, Secondary building materials and Binding materials.

Main building materials are rocks and artificial stones, timber and metals.

Secondary materials are used for interior parts of the building.

Binding materials are lime, gypsum and cement.

Cement, concrete and brick are artificial building materials. Timber, rocks, lime and sand are natural building materials.

Materials that are used for structural purposes should be hard, durable, fire-resistant and easily fastened together.

Wood is the most ancient structural material. It is light, cheap and easy to work. But wood has certain disadvantages: it burns and decays.

Stone belongs to one of the oldest building materials used by man. It is characteristic of many properties. They are: mechanical strength, compactness, porosity, sound and heat insulation and fire-resistance.

Concrete is referred to as one of the most important building materials. Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, crushed stone and water.

Steel has come into use with the development of industry. Its manufacture requires special equipment and skilled labour.

Plastics combine all the fine characteristics of a building material with good insulating properties.

The great structures of our days require new methods of construction and new building materials. New different synthetic materials and glass are widely used in construction. Housebuilding plants and combines are built on a large scale in our country.

Construction in our country has provided for the erection and reconstruction of plants of building materials and the enlargement of prefabricated construction members.

CONCRETE

Concrete is the most necessary material in modern architecture. Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, broken bricks or gravel and water. When mixed and left for a time this mass becomes as hard as stone.

A good concrete is required to be hard, strong, durable, dense, non-porous, fire-resisting and economical. The characteristics of concrete are influenced by the quality of the materials, grading of the aggregates, proportioning, amount of water used and workmanship. Grading is the variation in the size of the aggregates. Adequate grading is economical, as less cement is needed when the aggregates are well graded.

It is most important to appreciate that the strength of mortar depends very largely upon the amount of water used in relation to the cement; and excess of water results in a considerable reduction in strength. Just sufficient water should be added to make the mix reasonably plastic and workable.

Concrete has an adequate compressive strength but its tensile strength is low. Before pouring concrete mixture we can place long steel rods or a steel mesh into the trough. We call this reinforced concrete. The combination of concrete and steel provides resistance to both compressive and tensile stresses.

Concrete is as plastic as clay, and it is much easier to get unusual shapes from concrete than from stone or brick.

There are some types of concrete used in construction: in-situ concrete, precast concrete, pre-stressed concrete, light-weight concrete and others.
