Realistic art was not common among Native Americans of the North-west Pacific Coast. In a great many cases where the object carved was for a ceremonial use the animals were not realistic representations of the familiar ones of everyday life. They were either mythical beings belonging to the supernatural past or present, or were the actual animals represented in the more nearly human form, which they were all believed to possess. In the second place, the totem poles in particular were intended to suggest a narrative, or a combination of ideas. To do this the artist took liberties with the anatomy of the animals in order to bring about the combination he desired. The better carvers of the North-west Coast were skilful enough to portray accurately features of religious and symbolic significance. On the other hand, some carvings were definitely intended as realistic representations of animals and portraits of humans, rather than as representations of mythical monsters and personages.

The part that got me was a lady sitting next to me that cried all through the goddam picture. The phonier it got, the more she cried. You'd have thought she did it because she was kind-hearted as hell, but I was sitting right next to her, and she wasn't. She had this little kid with her that was bored as hell and had to go to the bathroom, but she wouldn't take him. She kept telling him to sit still and behave himself. She was about as kind-hearted as a goddam wolf. You take somebody that cries their goddam eyes out over phoney stuff in the movies, and nine times out of ten they're mean bastards at heart. I'm not kidding.

The inside scoop on making gelato
Italy's Carpigiani Gelato University teaches its students, who hail from all over the globe, how to craft the creamy dessert from simple, fresh ingredients in a few steps.
Reporting from Bologna, Italy -- —
Leave
it to Italy-- a country where food and tradition go hand in hand --
to be home to the first university dedicated to the art of making
gelato.
In fact, the Carpigiani
Gelato University,
located outside Bologna, is doing its all to ensure that the future
of gelato, will continue to be that of a fresh product made from
all-natural ingredients for local consumption.
Carpigiani, which has sold gelato-making equipment since 1945, started teaching the classes in 2003. Its courses have attracted students from more than 100 countries, many of whom returned home to open their own Italian-style gelateria. Carpigiani graduates hail from the expected places such as Italy, the United Kingdom, France and the United States, but also the unexpected, such as Sudan, Iraq and Iran. Enrollment from Asia and South America is booming, while the Middle East —Egypt, Israel, Dubai — provides a steady flow of pupils. Classes are held at the sanitary-looking white Carpigiani headquarters along Via Emilia, an industrial byway constructed by the ancient Romans. One recent crop of students — 41 in all — resembled a United Nations conference. Japanese, Brazilian, Indian, German, American, Polish, Nigerian, Mexican, Belgian, Turkish and Tanzanian students were focused on the impassioned words of program developer Luciano Ferrari and gelato maker Alessandro Racca, who teach the art and science behind their trade.
