How the Lion Gave Out Tails
One can say that many animals lived on the fat of the land when the Lion was the king in the Belorussian Forest. The opposition minority, as always, barely made both ends meet, although there were potatoes and meat. The Fox, who fooled everyone, swam in luxury of course.
All could be fine, if not for the fact mat the animals, except the Lion, had no tails at that time. In the summer time they suffered from mosquitoes and flies - there was nothing to brush them off with. The Lion took the problem very much to heart and said that tomorrow he would be giving out tails. The Wolf was the first to run to the Lion's place to get a tail However, the Fox came out of the bushes and said that it was she who was the first to come, but had just stayed a bit in the bushes to powder her nose.
The Lion gave her a dirty look. He never turned a blind eye to lies, and often showed up the Fox. But that morning the Lion decided he would not be breaking a lance. He gave the Fox up as a hopeless case and permitted her to be the first to choose a tail. The Lion was a kind gentleman. He bore no grudge. That's how the Fox managed to get the most beautiful and bushy tail.
By night almost all the animals had tails. They were on cloud nine. The Hare, for instance, was very happy to have a little tail because it made it easier to run away from the Wolf and dogs. The Horse was glad to have hers, for it became possible to brush off flies with it. Besides, they don't look a gift tail in the mouth, do they?
It turned out that the Bear had stuffed his belly with honey the day before, fell asleep and came for a tail a day after the fair, that is, when there were no tails left.
He tried to take away a tail from the Badger but failed: the Badger made a hole and hid there from the Bear. The Fox heard that the Bear was without a tail and she made a hole for herself, too, because one cannot be too careful.
Much water has run under the bridge since then. The Badger and the Fox live now in holes whereas young ladies wear "horse tails" in order, one must think, to shoo away men like pesky flies.
And that's all she wrote.
