The Past Indefinite and Present Perfect I
Present Perfect I introduces a subject or sums it up. The Past Indefinite refers to the circumstances.
E.g. - Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat,
Where have you been?
- I have been to London

So you see, I’ve told you all the truth.
In special questions beginning with “When?” only the Past Indefinite is used.
E.g. Have you ever been to India? When were you there?
In special questions beginning with “What?”, “Who?”, “Where?”, “What … for?”, “Why?” both the tenses may be found depending on their meaning.
E.g. What have I done against you? Why can’t we get on?

Where have you been? Look at your shoes!

In special questions beginning with other interrogative words the Past Indefinite is normally found.
E.g. How did he get in? – Oh, he’s got a key.
“Just” is used with Present Perfect I, “just now” – with the Past Indefinite.
E.g. I have just come.
I came just now.
When adverbs of time: “this morning”, “this afternoon”, etc. denote a period which is over the Past Indefinite is used.
E.g. Your husband fell ill this afternoon.
But: It’s 10. I have done only one room this morning.
Sometimes a past period may be denoted by an adverbial modifier of place.
E.g. Mrs. Green, I met your husband at the theater.
If the circumstances are definite in the speaker’s mind, the Past Indefinite is used.
E.g. Did you enjoy the film?
Did you like the book?
What did you say?
I didn’t hear what you said.
Sorry, I didn’t catch your name.
