Dialogue II
T. The terminal building should provide space for many activities Among them are airline operations, facilities for the convenience of passengers, offices for airport management (authorities) and some others. S. The word "management" moans " управление", doesn't it? T. Yes, it means "Управление, руководство". Let's consider the above mentioned activities. Airlines require space in the terminal building for a variety of operations. Can you name any of them? S. I think I can. There are the passenger and baggage handling (processing) counters, such as ticket counters (booking offices), check-in counters, baggage claim areas, the information counter (the inquiry office). T. Quite right. Thank you. Do all of you know the meanings of the meaning of the word combinations '"booking-office", "chick-in counter" and "baggage claim area"?
S. Yes, we do. These word combinations mean "билетная касса", регистрационная стойка" и "место выдачи багажа" correspondingly.
Т. That's correct. Beside these activities airlines provide also the telecommunication facilities, processing of mall express (which means "срочные почтовые отправления") and light-cargo, flight catering activities ( служба бортпитания ) and crew rest facilities.
So, to sum up, will you name the airline activities that the terminal building should provide space for?
S. For an effective airline operation the terminal building should provide space for passenger and baggage-handling counters (ticket, check-in, and information), a baggage claim area as well as for the telecommunication facilities, the mail express and light cargo processing, flight catering activities and the crew rest facilities. A considerable amount of space must be allocated for the convenience of the general public. The terminal building must provide space for a central lobby (the American term is "concourse") where passengers may rest while waiting for their flights; facilities for dispensing food (restaurants, snack bars), nursery for passengers with small children, a first-aid room, as well as a post-office department, public telephones and various shops. Now let's see if you could guess the meaning of the new terms you met in this passage. What is the Russian for the words "lobby" and "concourse"? S." Зал ожидания, вестибюль ". These words are synonyms. T. Right. And could you guess the meaning of the word "nursery"? S. Easily. As the name implies it must be a room for passengers with small children. T. Yes, it is. And what does the word combinations "first-aid room" mean?
S, It means " пункт неотложной помощи, медпункт".
T. Exactly so. '"At international airports custom (which means "таможенный") inspection, passport and health control are needed. So, are custom inspection, passport and health control needed at every airport?
S. No, they are needed only at International airports.. At large airports the air traffic control tower may be in a separate building. In such cases the communication facilities and the Weather Bureau are usually on the lower floors of the building. Will you, please, tell where the air traffic control tower is usually located?
S. At large airports the air traffic control tower is usually in a separate building, which may also house the Heather Bureau and communication facilities on its lower floors.
T. Now, to review the functions the terminal building should provide do exercise 6.
