I. Reading Exercises:
Exercise 1. Read and memorize using a dictionary:
vessel, fluid, exit, combustion chamber, immersion, nuclear fission, fire-tube boiler, boiler barrel, furnace, firebox, drum, reverse direction, storage capacity. |
Exercise 2. Answer the questions:
1) How can you classify the boilers?
2) What boiler types are called fire – tube boilers?
3) What boiler types are called water – tube boilers?
4) What boiler types are called water – tube fireboxes?
Exercise 3. Match the left part with the right:
1. The source of heat for a boiler is |
the heat rejected from other processes such as gas turbines. |
2. Electric boilers use |
combustion of any of several fuels. |
3. Nuclear fission is also used |
resistance or immersion type heating elements. |
4. Heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) use |
as a heat source for generating steam. |
Exercise 4. Open brackets choosing the right words:
The furnace can be situated at one end of a fire-tube which (shortens/lengthens) the path of the hot gases, thus (cutting/augmenting) the heating surface which can be further (decreased/increased) by making the gases reverse direction through a second parallel tube or a bundle of multiple tubes.
II. Speaking Exercises:
Exercise 1. Describe pot boiler; fire tube boiler; furnace; locomotive type boiler; water – tube boiler; water – tube fireboxes using the suggested words and expressions as in example:
pot boiler primitive “kettle”; fire; to heat; partially-filled water container; from below. example: a primitive “kettle” where a fire heats a partially–filled water container from below. |
fire tube boiler water; partially fill; boiler barrel; small volume left above; to accommodate the steam space ; the heat source; inside a firebox; permanently surrounded by the water; to maintain the temperature; just below boiling point. |
furnace enclosed chamber; heat; is produced; to heat buildings; destroy; refuse; smelt or refine ores. |
Locomotive type boiler boiler barrel; to extend; from the firebox; hot gases; to pass through ;bundle of fire tubes; inside the barrel. |
water – tube boiler the water tubes; are arranged; inside a furnace; in a number of configurations. |
water – tube fireboxes the firebox; to contain; assembly of water tubes; the gases; to pass through; conventional fire-tube boiler. |
Exercise 2. Ask questions to the given answers:
1) Question: ___________________________________?
Answer: A boiler is a closed vessel in which water or other fluid is heated.
2) Question: ___________________________________?
Answer: Construction of boilers is mainly limited to carbon steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. In live steam toys, brass is often used.
3) Question: ___________________________________?
Answer: The source of heat for a boiler is combustion of any of several fuels, such as wood, coal, oil, or natural gas.
4) Question: ___________________________________?
Answer: Heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) use the heat rejected from other processes such as gas turbines.
