Text 1 What is a computer?

“I think it’s fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we’ve ever created. They’re tools of communication, they’re tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user.”

Bill Gates

Modern world is impossible without computers and their applications. They are almost in every sphere of our life. But what is a computer? While the term computer can apply to virtually any device that has a microprocessor in it, most people think of a computer as a device that receives input from the user through a mouse or keyboard, processes it and displays the result on a screen.

The first electronic digital computers (developed between 1940 and 1945) were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space.

A computer is an electronic device that accepts, processes, stores and outputs information. A typical computer system consists of two parts: hardware and software. Hardware is any electronic or mechanical part you can see and touch. Software is a set of instructions, called a program, which tells the computer what to do.

All general-purpose computers require the following hardware components:

- memory: enables a computer to store, at least temporarily, data and programs.

- mass storage device: allows a computer to permanently retain large amounts of data. Common mass storage devices include disk drives and tape drives.

- input device: usually a keyboard and mouse, the input device is the conduit through which data and instructions enter a computer.

- output device: a display screen, printer, or other device that lets you see what the computer has accomplished.

- central processing unit (CPU): the heart of the computer, this is the component that actually executes instructions.

There are physical units attached to the computer (e.g. the keyboard, the monitor, etc.). They are called peripherals. At the back of the computer there are ports into which we plug external devices (e.g. a scanner, a modem, etc.). They allow communication between the computer and the devices. In addition to these components there are many others that make it possible for the basic components to work together efficiently.

Personal computers in their various forms are what most people think of as “computers.” However, the embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are the most numerous.

Computers help to diagnose diseases. They are the best means for storage and management of data. There are fully automated factories running on software. We book air tickets or railway tickets using the Internet. We make hotel reservations online.

Shopping via Internet is common nowadays.

Nowadays millions of people can no longer live without computers.

A desktop computer is a small machine that has a screen which is not part of the _____________. Most people keep them on top of a desk that is why they are called ‘_____________’. Similar in operation to desktop computers, laptop computers are miniaturized and optimized for _____________ use. Laptops run on a single battery or an external _____________ that charges the computer batteries. They are enabled with an inbuilt _____________, touch pad acting as a mouse and a liquid crystal display. Both laptops and desktops are called _____________, because one person at a time uses them for things like playing music, surfing the web, or playing video games.

There are bigger computers that many people at a time can use. They are _____________. Large organizations use mainframes for highly critical applications such as bulk data processing. Most of the mainframe computers have capacities to host _____________ operating systems and operate as a number of virtual machines. They can substitute (to substitute -заменить) for several small servers.

There is another type of computer, called an embedded computer. An embedded computer is a computer that does one thing and one thing only, and usually does it very well. For example, an alarm clock is an _____________ computer: it tells the time. Embedded computers cannot be programmed. Some _____________, automatic teller machines, microwave ovens, CD players and cars are examples of embedded computers.

Exercise 11. Translate the following text in a written form. Use a dictionary if necessary.

A computer is one of the most brilliant inventions of mankind. Thanks to computer technology, we have been able to achieve storage and processing of huge amounts of data. We can rest our brains by employing computer memory capacities for information storage. Owing to computers, we have been able to achieve higher processing speeds, execute critical transactions and that too with great precision and accuracy.

Computers of the earlier times were of the size of a large room and required to consume huge amounts of electric power. However, with the advancing technology, computers have shrunk to the size of a small watch.

Read and translate the dialogues.

I

Sam - John, my younger brother decided to study a computer. Will you help him, please? He’s got a lot of questions.

John – With pleasure.

William – John, what is a computer?

John – It is an electronic device that executes the instructions in a program.

William – What is Hardware?

John – Physical parts of the computer.

William – And what is Software?

John – Programs that tell the computer what to do.

William – And what is the difference between ‘data’ and ‘information’?

John – Data is individual facts like first name, price. Information is data which has been messaged into a useful form, like a complete mailing address.

William - What makes a computer powerful?

John – Speed.

William – How many actions can a computer do?

John – Billions of actions per second.

William – And what about storage?

John – A computer can keep huge amounts of data... Sam, are you ready?

William – What are the main functions of the computer?

John – They are four functions: input, processing, output, and storage…. Sam! We are short of time…

II

- What is a computer made of?

- Computers are made of electronic parts called components. Each component has a specific function.

- When do they work?

- They all work together when a computer is operated.

- Can I see them?

- Some of the components can be seen partly from the outside.

- And others?

- Some components are inside the computer box where we can’t see them.

- Seeing the components inside the computer is interesting.

- Yes. Look at the brain of the computer, CPU.

- What is the main function of the CPU?

- Whenever we press a key, click the mouse, or start an application, we send instructions to the CPU. These are all executed by the CPU.

III

- Can we see the details of the components inside this computer, after logging in?

- Yes, on the desktop, from the taskbar. Click on the System submenu.

- And then?

- Under Administration click on System monitor, which shows you details and status of hardware and software of the computer.

- Hey! There are four processors in this computer. There are many details for these processors.

- The processing of your instructions is shared between the four processors, just the way you share work among your team.

- What does 2.66 GHz mean?

- This stands for 2.66 Giga Hertz. You know that Mega means million and Giga means billion. Hertz means cycles per second.

- How many cycles does the CCPU need?

- The CPU needs one or more cycles to perform an action. More cycles per second means that the CPU can process more instructions per second.

- Oh, I understood: the higher the Hertz, the faster the CPU can process instructions.
