Присвійний відмінок (the possessive case)

Відмінок іменника — це така його форма, яка виражає зв’язок з іншими словами.

Присвійний відмінок (The Possessive Case)

Присвійний відмінок відповідає на запитання: Чий? Чия? Чиє? Іменник у присвійному відмінку зазвичай стоїть перед іншим іменником та є до нього означенням (відповідно до українського іменника в родовому відмінку або присвійного займенника): the children’s mother (мати дітей), my friend’s hat (шапка мого друга).

В українській мові спочатку йде предмет (що?), а вже потім — його приналежність до когось (чиє?), в англійській — навпаки. Саме ця відмінність спричиняє певні труднощі при перекладі:

my parents’ house — дім моїх батьків.

Вживання присвійного відмінка іменника

1. У присвійному відмінку вживаються переважно ті іменники, що позначають живі істоти — людей або тварин:

Nick’s friend (друг Миколи), dog’s tail (хвіст собаки).

2. Крім того, є окремі іменники, що теж можуть вживатися у цьо­му відмінку:

а) іменники, що позначають час, вагу та відстань:

two days’ leave (дводенна відпустка),

at a mill’s distance (на відстані в одну милю);

б) іменники, що позначають — країни, міста, судна, а також слова world, country, town, city, ocean, river та ship:

Kyiv’s parks (парки Києва), river’s banks (береги річки); the ocean’s roar; London’s museums; Africa’s future.

в) іменники, що означають назви планет:

the sun’s rays (сонячні промені);

г) збірні іменники:

society (суспільство), goverment (уряд), party (партія), army (армія), crew (команда), family (сім’я),

the society’s members (члени товариства); the nation’s wealth (богатство нації)

д) прислівники часу:

today (сьогодні), tomorrow (завтра), yesterday (вчора),

today’s newspaper (сьогоднішня газета); month’s holiday, yesterday’s excursion вчорашня єкскурсія

е) неозначені займенники, що позначають невідому особу:

somebody, someone (хтось), anybody, anyone (хто-небудь), other, another (інший), somebody’s pen (чиясь ручка).

Утворення присвійного відмінка іменників

Присвійний відмінок іменників утворюється:

1. додаванням апострофа (’) та закінчення -s, якщо іменник в однині:

Tom’s book (книжка Тома); Jerry’s phone (телефон Джері)

2. додаванням тільки апострофа (’) або апострофа та закінчення -s, якщо іменник закінчується на -s, -ss, -x:

James’ coat або James's coat (пальто Джеймса);

3. додаванням тільки апострофа (’), якщо іменник у множині:

the students’ marks (оцінки студентів); children’s bags (портфелі дітей),

4. додаванням апострофа (’) та закінчення -s до останнього іменника, якщо у присвійному відмінку вживається ціле словосполу­чення:

Ann and Mary’s room (кімната Ганни та Марії).

Такі слова, як house (дім), shop (магазин), office (контора), часто пропускаються у позиції обставини місця після іменників, вжитих у присвійному відмінку:

Yesterday I was at my friend’s.

(Вчора я була у своєї подруги).

(замість: Yesterday I was at my friend’s house.)

Присвійний відмінок може бути виражений також за допомогою прийменника of

(особливо, коли є два іменника, вжиті у присвійному відмінку):

She is the sister of his wife’s mother.

(Вона сестра матері його дружини).

(замість: She is his wife’s mother’s sister.)

Якщо вказується належність чого-небудь неживій особі, а предмету то вживається конструкція з прийменником of, наприклад:

the legs of the table - ножки стола, the screen of the monitor, the window of the room

Або іменник у загальному відмінку ставиться поспіль, причому перше слово іменник

є визначенням до другого the table legs.

Exercise 2. Доповніть речення, вживаючи іменники у присвійному відмінку.

For me the afternoon is (the best part / day for learning). 11. ... is very interesting. (the book / this writer). 12 ... is very luxurious. (the design / this room).
