AES-2006 DESIGN
The AES-2006 design is an evolutionary development of the NPPs designs with WWER-type reactors. It was initially based on the AES-91 design implemented at two units of the Tianwan NPP in China using a number of technologies (passive systems of heat removal from the steam generators and reactor containment) that had been validated in the course of WWER-640 design development.
The architecture of the safety systems designed by JSC ATOMPROEKT bases on evolutionary principles which means that is factors in the proven and reasonable solutions, thus reducing risks during units licensing.
The said units are designed and constructed in line with the Russian regulatory framework. In addition, the design complies with the IAEA and EUR recommendations and meets the post-Fukushima requirements
The AES-2006/E design factors in the EUR and WENRA requirements to NPP safety, including those related to protection against heavy aircraft crash and increased seismic load at the NPP site. The design leans heavily on the functional redundancy principle; it complies with the European regulatory framework
The power unit has a double-loop thermal circuit.
The V-491 reactor plant comprises the following major equipment and systems:
Pressurized water vessel reactor with thermal power of 3200, MW with heat exchanger pressure of 16.2 MPa. The heat exchanger and the moderator in the reactor is water with boric acid. Acid concentration varies while in operation. Slightly enriched uranium dioxide is used as a reactor core fuel;
Four PGV-1000MKP type horizontal steam generators with widely spaced corridor arrangement of pipe matrices. Each steam generator produces (1602+112) t/h of dry saturated steam with pressure of 7.0 MPa;
Four GTsNA-1391 type reactor coolant pump sets;
Main circulation pipelines Du-850;
Pressure compensation system;
Equipment of reactor concrete vault
To design the safety systems for the AES-2006 1WWER12001 design. The following principles were applied:
The defense-in-depth concept. A system of barriers is used to prevent the release of radioactive material into the environment.
Deterministic principles. Redundancy, diversity and segregation.
Compliance with the target probability criteria, as well as with radiation safety criteria. The target probability criteria are set at the statutory level.
The secondary circuit is not radioactive. It consists c the steam-generating part of the steam generators main steam pipelines, a turbine plant, auxiliary and service systems, equipment for deaeration and feet ter heating and supply to steam generators. The typ turbine plant is defined in the design depending on customer's requirements.
As part of the NPP power unit, the reactor may operate both in basic and maneuvering mode
A remarkable achievement of the Company in terms of safety systems designing for modern NPPs was introducing the so-called core catcher (a passive safety device for the containment of molten core material). In the event of a beyond — design — basis (severe) accident, the main tasks of the device are as follows:
Receive and retaining molten core material escaping from the reactor;
Prevent the spread of the molten core material beyond the containment area;
Ensure subcriticality of the molten core in the concrete vault;
Ensure sustained cooling of the molten core material;
Minimize the release of radioactive substances into the containment,
Ensure minimum release of hydrogen.
In addition, the core catcher itself has self-contained energy-independent cooling mechanism regulated by passive safety systems.
First reactors to be equipped with core-catchers were two of Tianwan NPP units in China commissioned in 2007.
The following facilities are under construction to the AES – 2006 design:
The Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant II (Power Units 1 to 4, Leningrad Region, Russia). Power Unit 1 start-up is scheduled for 2015;
The Baltic Nuclear Power Plant (Power Units 1 and 2, Kaliningrad Region, Russia);
The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (Power Units 1 and 2, the Republic of Belarus). Power Units 1and 2 are scheduled to be commissioned in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
The priority design works are underway for Hanhikivi-1 NPP in Finland (the NPP-2006/E modification).
Currently, the Rosatom State Corporation is in contract negotiation over the implementation of NPP-2006 design for further construction of the Paks NPP in Hungary and the Ninh Thuan NPP in Vietnam.
