§3. The article (Артикль)

Вживання неозначеного артикля:

-Класифікація предмета (злічуваний іменник у однині)

Ex: This is a book.

-Введення нового предмета:

Ex: There is a book on the table.

-Вигук

Ex: What a good idea!

-Назви днів тижня, місяців, пір року та прийомів їжі при наявності описового означення:

Ex: A happy Sunday, a hot summer, a hearty dinner

-Словосполучення “certain+ ім’я: A certain Mary Brown.

-Один представник родини:

Ex: There was a Brown there, and a Smith.

Вживання означеного артикля:

-Предмет (поняття), що згадувався раніше: Ex: This is a book.

The book is good.

- ситуація робить предмет, (поняття) конкретним:

Ex: The day is nice.

-позначення усієї родини: I like the Browns very much.

-словосполучення «професія + ім'я»

Ex: Is the broker Brown present?

-словосполучення «прикметник + ім'я»:

Ex: She was lucky to see the famous Brown on the stage.

-назви днів тижня, місяців, пір року та прийомів їжі, якщо є конкретизуюче означення:

Ex: The Sunday they met, the summer they went to Italy.

-назви мов, якщо вживається слово language: the English language

-назви готелів, пароплавів, газет, організацій:

Ex: The Hilton Hotel, The Titanic, The Guardian.

Aртикль не вживається:

-при введенні нового предмета (поняття) (незлічуванний іменник або злічуваний у множині):

Ex: There is life here. There are books on the table.

-словосполучення «звання +ім'я», «родинна приналежність +ім'я», «прикметники типу little, honest, lazy, old+ ім'я»:

Ex: Poor John, aunt Jane, colonel Brown

-назви днів тижня, місяців, пір року та прийомів їжі:

Sunday; January; summer.

-у словосполученнях: to (at) school, (college, prison etc), якщо вони позначають інститут/вид транспорту загалом, а не конкретну школу.

Вживання артикля з географічними назвами:

1. Означений артикль the вживається з назвами:

а) держав, які містять у собі слова Union, State(s), Republic, Kingdom:

- The United States of America

- The United Kingdom of Great Britain

b) гірських масивів та груп островів:

- The Alps, The Urals

- The Bermudas, The Bahamas

с) океанів, морів, річок, регіонів, озер: (якщо поряд з назвою озера вживається слово lake Baikal тоді, артикль не вживається)

- The Atlantic, the Pacific

- The Baltic Sea, The Black Sea

- The Baikal, The Ladoga

- The Nile, The Volga

- The Far East, The Middle East, the North of England

2.Артикль не вживається перед назвами вулиць, майданів, міст, провінцій, континентів, держав, гірських вершин, окремих островів.

- Australia, Europe, Central Asia.

- Russia, England, Western Canada.

- London, Moscow.

- Elbrus, Everest.

- Sicily, Madagascar.

(but: the Congo, the Sudan, the Netherlands, the Crimea)
