The History of the Automobile

The word automobile is a classical compound derived from the Ancient Greek word autós (meaning self), and the Latin word mobilis (meaning movable).

So, who invented the automobile? This question does not have a straightforward answer. The automobile was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile is very rich and dates back to the 15th century when Leonardo da Vinci was creating designs and models for transport vehicles

But it is the year 1886 which is regarded as the birth year of the modern car. In that year, German inventor Karl Benz built the Benz Patent-Motorwagen.

Early Steam Powered Cars

In 1769, the very first self-propelled road vehicle was a military tractor invented by French engineer and mechanic, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot (1725-1804). It was used by the French Army to haul artillery at a whopping speed of 2 1/2 mph on only three wheels. The vehicle had to stop every ten to fifteen minutes to build up steam power. The following year (1770), Cugnot built a steam-powered tricycle that carried four passengers. Steam engines powered cars by burning fuel that heated water in a boiler, creating steam that expanded and pushed pistons that turned the crankshaft, which then turned the wheels.

Steam engines were not the only engines used in early automobiles. Vehicles with electrical engines were also invented. Electric cars used rechargeable batteries that powered a small electric motor. The vehicles were heavy, slow, expensive, and needed to stop for recharging frequently.

Both steam and electric road vehicles were abandoned in favor of gas-powered vehicles. Electricity found greater success in tramways and streetcars, where a constant supply of electricity was possible.

The History of Electric Vehicles

Who invented the very first electric vehicle is uncertain and several inventors have been given credit. More practical and more successful electric road vehicles were invented by Thomas Davenport and Scotsmen Robert Davidson around 1842. Both inventors were the first to use the newly invented but non-rechargeable electric cells or batteries.

In the late 1800s, France and Great Britain were the first nations to support the widespread development of electric vehicles while Americans began to devote attention to electric vehicles in 1895 after an electric tricycle was built by A. L. Ryker and William Morrison built a six-passenger wagon both in 1891.

By the turn of the century, America was prosperous and cars, now available in steam, electric, or gasoline versions, were becoming more popular. The years 1899 and 1900 were the high point of electric cars in America, as they outsold all other types of cars.

Electric vehicles had many advantages over their competitors in the early 1900s. They did not have the vibration, smell, and noise associated with gasoline cars.

Electric vehicles enjoyed success into the 1920s with production peaking in 1912. But later the electric car declined in popularity and had all but disappeared by 1935.

The 60s and 70s saw a need for alternative-fueled vehicles to reduce the problems of exhaust emissions from internal combustion engines and to reduce the dependency on imported foreign crude oil. Many attempts to produce practical electric vehicles occurred during the years from 1960 and beyond.

The Internal Combustion Engine and Early Gas-Powered Cars

Many history books say that the automobile was invented by either Gottlieb Daimler or Karl Benz because both Daimler and Benz invented highly successful and practical gasoline-powered vehicles that ushered in the age of modern automobiles. Daimler and Benz invented cars that looked and worked like the cars we use today.

An internal combustion engine is any engine that uses the explosive combustion of fuel to push a piston within a cylinder – the piston's movement turns a crankshaft that then turns the car wheels via a chain or a drive shaft. The different types of fuel commonly used for car combustion engines are gasoline (or petrol), diesel, and kerosene.

A brief outline of the history of the internal combustion engine includes the following highlights:

  • 1680 – Dutch physicist, Christian Huygens designed (but never built) an internal combustion engine that was to be fueled with gunpowder.

  • 1858 – Belgian-born engineer, Jean Joseph Étienne Lenoir invented a double-acting, electric spark-ignition internal combustion engine fueled by coal gas.

  • 1876 – Nikolaus August Otto invented a successful four-stroke engine, known as the "Otto cycle".

  • 1885 – Gottlieb Daimler invented what is often recognized as the prototype of the modern gas engine – with a vertical cylinder, and with gasoline injected through a carburetor.

  • 1886 – On January 29, Karl Benz received the first patent for a gas-fueled car.

  • 1889 – Daimler built an improved four-stroke engine with mushroom-shaped valves and two V-slant cylinders.

  • 1890 – Wilhelm Maybach built the first four-cylinder, four-stroke engine.

Engine design and car design were integral activities, almost all of the engine designers mentioned above also designed cars, and a few went on to become major manufacturers of automobiles. Daimler founded the Daimler Motoren-Gesellschaft in 1890 to manufacture his designs. Eleven years later, Wilhelm Maybach designed the Mercedes automobile.

The First Mass Producers of Cars – The Assembly Line

By the early 1900s, gasoline cars started to outsell all other types of motor vehicles. The market was growing for economical automobiles and the need for industrial production was pressing.

The first car manufacturers (builders of entire motor vehicles for sale and not just engine inventors who experimented with car design to test their engines) in the world were French: Panhard & Levassor (1889) and Peugeot (1891). Rene Panhard and Emile Levassor built their first car in 1890 using a Daimler engine.

The first automobile to be mass produced in the United States was the 1901, Curved Dash Oldsmobile, built by the American car manufacturer Ransome Eli Olds (1864-1950). Olds invented the basic concept of the assembly line and started the Detroit area automobile industry.

American car manufacturer, Henry Ford (1863-1947) invented an improved assembly line and installed the first conveyor belt-based assembly line in his car factory in Ford's Highland Park, Michigan plant, around 1913-1914.

The assembly line reduced production costs for cars by reducing assembly time. Ford made his first car, called the «Quadricycle» in June, 1896.

However, success came after he formed the Ford Motor Company in 1903. He introduced the Model T in 1908 and it was a success. After installing the moving assembly lines in his factory in 1913, Ford became the world's biggest car manufacturer. By 1927, 15 million Model Ts had been manufactured.

Dialogue 1.

Dialogue 2.

Dialogue 3.

Driven To Succeed: The World’s 10 Largest Automotive Companies

The automotive industry is a wide range of companies and organizations involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing, and selling of motor vehicles. It is one of the world's most important economic sectors by revenue.

The automotive industry began in the 1890s with hundreds of manufacturers that pioneered the horseless carriage. For many decades, the United States led the world in total automobile production. In 1929 before the Great Depression, the world had 32,028,500 automobiles in use, and the U.S. automobile industry produced over 90% of them. At that time the U.S. had one car per 4.87 persons. After World War II, the U.S. produced about 75 percent of world's auto production. In 1980, the U.S. was overtaken by Japan and became world's leader again in 1994. In 2006, Japan narrowly passed the U.S. in production and held this rank until 2009, when China took the top spot with 13.8 million units. With 19.3 million units manufactured in 2012, China almost doubled the U.S. production, with 10.3 million units, while Japan was in third place with 9.9 million units.

Today, the global automotive industry has gone through rapid change, and is full of tense competition between big players fighting for larger market share. Nowadays, that means a lot of integration of advanced computers into cars, used to improve everything from navigation, to battery charging, to entertainment. Together with the superior safety and reliability of the cars of today, better performance, comfort and style, energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact are and continue to be the priorities for automobile makers with their eyes fixed on delivering the most popular products of tomorrow.

There are several automobile companies who mint money selling cars, and there are others who made their fortune marketing trucks. It’s a complicated market, filled with dozens of options that tailor to different crowds, different tastes, and different incomes.

Here are the 10 largest automobile companies in the world.

Toyota, the world`s largest automaker, was founded in 1937 by Kiichito Toyota. Today, Toyota is the world`s largest producer of trucks, and the second largest manufacturer of cars, just behind Volkswagen. As of 2013, Toyota is also the thirteenth-largest company in the world by revenue. The largest listed company in Japan by market capitalization and revenue, Toyota has also one of the largest conglomerates in the world – the TMC.

Commonly known as GM, General Motors is an American automobile company which manufactures vehicles in 37 countries worldwide and produces several brands, including Chevrolet, GMC, Isuzu, Opel Buick, and Cadillac. It was also the largest producer of light commercial vehicles in 2012, with over 2.6 million units built.

This company also led global vehicle sales from 1931 to 2007 – 77 consecutive years – the longest ever in automotive history.

Founded in the year 1937, Volkswagen is Germany`s largest automobile manufacturing company. Known by the slogan «Das Auto» («The Car»), it is the largest manufacturer of cars in the world, boasting an impressive total of 8,576,964 cars produced in 2013. However, it comes just shy of the lead in overall vehicle manufacture, with a total output of 9,254,742 vehicles. Volkaswagen also has the world`s three best selling cars of all time: the Volkswagen Golf, the Volkswagen Beetle, and the Volkswagen Passat. Not only involved in manufacture, Volkswagen is also the highest-spending company for research and development of automobiles.

Hyundai Motor Company is a 1967-founded South Korean multinational, and is the third largest producer of cars in the world. American car sales surged in 2013 thanks to Hyundai, as it recorded the all-time US sales record in August last year by exceeding a total sales of 66,000 units. Centennial, Genesis and Accent are some of the most popular car brands produced by Hyundai. Hyundai vehicles are sold in 193 countries worldwide, through around 6,000 dealerships and showrooms.

American automobile company Ford was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford. This multinational automaker is headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, and sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under its brand, and most of its luxury offerings under the Lincoln brand. Also listed on the New York Stock Exchanges, it is described as one of the most important industrial company in the history of America. Ford is the second largest automaker in the US and the seventh largest car producer in the world.

Founded in 1933, Nissan is a Japanese multinational automobile company headquartered in Yokohama, Japan. It is one of the largest manufacturers of light commercial vehicles, as well as of heavy commercial vehicles. The company is also known for manufacturing several memorable sports cars, like the Datsun Fairlady.

The company runs with two business segments, one which manufactures and sells vehicles, accessories, forklifts and marine products while the Sales Financing segment carries out the sales financing services.

Japanese public multinational corporation Honda Motor Company is known for the manufacture of automobiles and motorcycles. It has been the leading manufacturer of motorcycles since 1959, as well as the largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines in automobiles. It was the first Japanese automobile manufacturer, and released its first dedicated luxury brand, Acura, in 1986.

Beside manufacture of automobiles and their motorcycle businesses, Honda also produces power generators, personal watercrafts and marine engines. It is also involved in manufacture of robots with ASIMO being one of the best robots in the world.

Started as a coffee mill and bicycle manufacturing company in 1810, Peugeot SA established itself as an automobile manufacturing company in 1890. Today, Peugeot is a France-based manufacturer of passenger cars, motorcycles, bicycles, commercial vehicles and several automobile spare parts.

Though Peugeot has been popular in Europe, this company has not done much business in the US since 1991.

A Japanese multinational corporation headquartered in Minani-ku, Hamamatsu, Japan, Suzuki specializes in the manufacture of four-wheel drive vehicles, wheel chairs, automobiles, ATVs and small combustion engines. The second largest manufacturer of cars and trucks in Japan, Suzuki operates its business in three separate areas; the two-wheel vehicle branch, three-wheel vehicle branch, and the specialty vehicle branch. Indian company Maruti`s collaboration with Suzuki saw some quality cars released, including the Maruti Alto, Swift, Maruti Suzuki and Estilo, which were the highest selling cars in India.

Renault is a French multinational automobile company founded in 1899. This company is part-owned by France, with 15 percent of its stakes held by the French government. Renault manufactures Light commercial vehicles (LCV) only and does not manufacture heavy commercial vehicles or buses. Renault also does not market its cars in the US. It is the third-largest European automaker by production, coming in just under Volkswagen and PSA. This company is widely known for its presence in several motor sports, including Formula 1.

Activity 2. Translate into English using the dictionary:

• I’m studying at Automobile and Highway University.

  • Are you really? What faculty?

  • At the Faculty of Transport systems.

  • What are you doing?

  • I am doing different modes of transportation, Customs, and foreign languages.

  • How very interesting! You know I am leaving school this year and my dream is to enter this University. I am keen on racing cars. And I’d like to know if tuition is free of charge or paid there.

  • The tuition may be either free of charge or paid. It depends on the results of your entrance exams.

  • Thanks. Good-bye.

  • Bye for now. I’m running to the lecture.

Dialogue 2.

  • I know, Ann, you’ve entered the faculty of automobiles. I’d like to know if they teach foreign languages there.

  • It’s really useful!

  • German and English. English is my first language and German is the second. I have taken it up only this year.

  • Which of them do you find more difficult?
