II. Vocabulary in context text: the smile on the face of the mona liza

For many people, Leonardo da Vinci's world-famous painting, "The Mona Lisa", is simply a portrait of the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, a wealthy Florentine merchant. Certain investigators, conversely, claim that her enigmatic smile hides some startling surprises.

Why, for instance, is this particular painting so alluring? Dr Leopold Bellak, a psychology professor at New York University, has analyzed her face using the Zone System, whereby the left and right sides are studied independently, as are the top and bottom halves. Bellak concludes that her full cheeks suggest sensual indulgence and her weak chin implies a lack of self-control – flirtatious enough, perhaps, to attract the eye of any red-blooded male?

Perhaps not. American computer artist Lillian Schwartz and Maudsley Hospital registrar Dr Digby Quested believe that her face yields a very different message –for thеy claim that it is actually a mirror image of Leonardo da Vinci's own face!

Although it is known that Leonardo penned many notes in mirror-image writing, the concept of a transvestite Mona Lisa is still something of a shock; but worse is to come. The picture was stolen from the Louvre in 1911, and when later recovered it was X-rayed to check its authenticity. That was confirmed, but the X-rays also revealed that the Mona Lisa had apparently possessed a beard at one time, which had later been painted over.

If the Mona Lisa is a disguised portrait of Leonardo, however, then he may well have been even more remarkable a man than hitherto supposed. According to Dr Kenneth Keale, her cheery smile, youthful complexion, generous body proportions and the way in which her robe falls into her lap all show that the person depicted in this painting is heavily pregnant.

Pregnancies aside, she (or he?) may not have been in the best of health when posing for the portrait. In the view of Californian medical specialist Dr Kedar Ardour, her captivating smile is in fact the result of a type of facial paralysis called Bell's patsy, which explains its lopsided shape. This is aided and abetted, according to Maryland dentist Dr Joseph Sorkowski, by the equally tragic fact that she had somehow lost her front teeth, that is why her lips droop at the corners. But before we lose sight altogether of the mystique associated with the Mona Lisa, we should perhaps be thankful that the portrait was ever painted at all. In the opinion of Japanese heart specialist Dr Haruo Nakamura, noting the yellow pigmentation in the corner of her left eye, the person posing for this picture possessed high cholesterol levels and could have suffered a heart attack at any moment. So much for the healthy foods of earlier ages!

Exercise 19.

А) Read the text and proceed to the tasks.

One of the "facts" that everyone thinks they know about Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh is that he cut off his ear. Some people even go as far as to recall that he then mailed the ear to his mistress as a love token. There are two inaccuracies in the previous sentence: (1) ……… , and he gave it to a prostitute for safekeeping.

The infamous ear-cutting incident occurred in the city of Arles in the south of France, on December 23, 1888. Van Gogh had arrived in the city in February of that year and in May he leased four rooms at No. 2 Place Lamartine and demanded that they be painted yellow. In August, he painted Sunflowers; (2) ……… , and he hung the painting as a welcoming decoration in a bedroom prepared for Paul Gauguin, who joined him in October.

(3) ……… however, by December their relationship had deteriorated badly. Van Gogh, who likely suffered clinical depression, was driven to self-mutilation and sliced off the bottom of his left earlobe after becoming increasingly agitated that Gaugin was going to leave, destroying his dream of founding a Utopian art colony before it had even begun.

(4) ……… and gave it to a prostitute named Rachel with the instruction to "keep this object carefully." Gaugin left Arles and the two men never saw each other again. Though hospitalized, van Gogh was physically well enough to return to the Yellow House after Christmas, where his mental health continued to deteriorate until (5) ……… to rid themselves of "the red- headed madman".

His depression deepened until, on July 27, 1889, (6) ……… . He died from his injuries two days later, aged thirty-seven. His beloved brother Theo reported his last words as "the sadness will last forever".

  9. Who is your favorite portrait/ genre/ landscape/still life painter?

  10. What Ukrainian artists/national schools of painting do you know?

Exercise 21. Can you speak real English?

A) Read the texts below. Match choices (A-G) to (1-5). There are two choices you don’t need to use.

1.

He created the special variant of the "landscape of mood", in which the shape and condition of nature are spiritualized, and become carriers of conditions of the human soul. The landscape painter deeply felt both the lyrical, revealing, unique charm and quiet greatness of Russian nature. The work is noted for its pensive observations of nature, reflected in muted light and melancholy colors.

2.

This painting is the example of the new type of work created by the artist: genre portraits. The nice-looking young girl is staring archly at the viewer. Her movements and figure are full of grace. The image of a young and charming simple person linked with the traditions of Sentimentalism embodies the poetry of simplicity and pleasant home life. The general olive tone of the painting shows noble restraint. The texture of the painting becomes dense and acquires enamel brilliance.

3.

In the picture we see three epic heroes who have ridden a long way to defend the Russian border. The background is a little unusual. In the distance there is greenery which signifies the settled Russ. It approaches the foreground. It is felt that behind the mountain there is a deep ravine. The field, where the painter placed the heroes on horseback, approaches the onlooker and is distinctly different from the background. The landscape is simple: it is a wide swatch of feather-grass, semi-steppe with the occasional dwarf fir-trees that turns into that terrible steppe that swarms with hordes of nomads who create the troubles of the southern Russ.

4.

Upon looking at these paintings one begins to notice aspects that seem to flow from one piece to another. The colors are vibrant and express emotions typically associated with the life of sunflowers: bright yellows of the full bloom to arid browns of wilting and death; all of the stages woven through these polar opposites are presented. Perhaps this very technique is what draws one into the painting; the fulfillment of seeing all angles of the spectrum of life and in turn reaching a deeper understanding of how all living things are tied together.

5.

This painting depicts the historical 16th century story. The Emperor’s face is fraught with terror, as his son lay quietly dying in his arms, blood dripping down the side of his face, a single tear on his cheek. The artist began thinking about painting this historical episode after the assassination of Alexander II. In an attempt to recall other bloody episodes of Russian history, he painted this piece as a as an expression of his rejection of violence and bloodshed.

A Vincent van Gogh. Sunflowers.

B Sandro Boticelli. The Birth of Venus.

C Alexei Savrasov. The Rooks Have Come Back.

D Ilya Repin. Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan

E Isaac Levitan. Golden Autumn.

F Victor Vasnetsov. Three Bogatyrs.

G Vasily Tropinin. The Lacemaker.
