The Role of Social work.

Social work is practiced world-wide. The following is a widely accepted international definition: “The social work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Utilising theories of human behaviour and social systems, social work intervenes at the points where people interact with their environments. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work”. In preparing this Statement, the project team and Reference Group found it necessary to consider and seek answers to several different but related questions implied in the remit:

- What range of roles and tasks does modern social work encompass?

- What is unique or distinctive about social work roles and tasks compared with those of other disciplines?

- What roles and tasks require the levels of knowledge and skill possessed by social workers, as distinct from other social care staff?

- What roles and tasks should be performed only by social workers?

SOCIAL WORKER.

A social worker works with people who have been socially excluded or who are experiencing crisis. Their role is to provide support to enable service users to help themselves. They maintain professional relationships with service users, acting as guides, advocates or critical friends.

Social workers work in a variety of settings within a framework of relevant legislation and procedures, supporting individuals, families and groups within the community. Settings may include the service users' home, schools, hospitals and other public sector and voluntary organizations.

Qualified social work professionals are often supported by social work assistants. They also work closely with other health and social care staff.

Typical social work activities in USA

Over 50 % of social workers work with young people and their families. They may also work with the following groups:

• young offenders;

• people with mental health problems;

• school non-attenders;

• drug and alcohol abusers;

• people with learning and physical disabilities;

• the elderly.

Government legislation focusing on the integration of health and social work services means that social workers often work in multidisciplinary teams.
