Lexical theme: Building materials made of wood.

Team building.

Academic year 2016-2017

Teacher: assistant professor Moldabayeva M.K.

Exercise 1. Read the text and describe major uses of wood in the construction industry in your own words.

Wood

Wood has many characteristics that make it an important construction material. It can be easily shaped with tools and fastened with nails, screws, staples, and adhesives. It is light but strong. Wood provides insulation against electricity, heat, cold, and sound. It can hold paint and other finishes, and it does not rust like metal construction materials. Wood is a renewable resource. Some of the chief wood structural materials are round timbers, lumber, plywood, veneer products, and particle board.

Round timbers include pilings, poles, and posts. Pilings are driven into the ground as foundations for buildings. Poles link overhead telephone wires and power lines. Posts are used chiefly to build fences.

Lumber includes boards and larger pieces of wood that have been sawed from logs. The construction industry uses about 50 per cent of the lumber manufactured. We can classify lumber as softwood or hardwood.

Softwood lumber comes from needle leaf trees that are also called evergreens or conifers. It is used primarily for structural work because of its straightness and length. Softwoods include pine, larch, fir, cedar.

Hardwood lumber comes from trees that lose their leaves every autumn. They are widely used for flooring, furniture and paneling. Popular hardwoods include birch, maple, oak, walnut, and mahogany. Plywood consists of a number of thin sheets of wood called veneers that are glued together. Veneer products include beams that support ceilings and floors. Particle board is made from wood shavings, flakes, wafers, splinters, or sawdust left over in sawmills. This wood is mixed with an adhesive and pressed at a high temperature and pressure to form large panels. Particle board shrinks and swells very little in length and width.

Exercise 2. Translate the given sentences.

  1. Some of the chief wood structural materials are round timbers, lumber, plywood, veneer products, and particle board.

  2. Softwood lumber comes from needle leaf trees that are also called evergreens or conifers.

  3. Hardwood lumber are widely used for flooring, furniture and paneling.

  4. Particle board is made from wood shavings, flakes, wafers, splinters, or sawdust left over in sawmills.

  5. Lumber includes boards and larger pieces of wood that have been sawed from logs.

Exercise 3. Read the information about wood materials in the table then retell the pros-cons.

BLOCKBOARD - This is built up with a core of softwood strips bonded together with adhesive and covered with a sheet of plywood on either side. Used as a building material and for furniture manufacture including fitted kitchens / bedrooms.

Pros-Cons

Difficult to form joints, facing only for doors etc, Cheap, will not use as I have to form joints, good for knock-down furniture and high batch production. Low volume production for handmade joints better quality material needed.

CHIPBOARD - This is made up of small chips of wood bonded together with resin and formed into sheets by compression. It is not as strong as plywood and block board but it is not expensive. Chipboard is often covered with a plastic laminate or wood veneer and used in furniture.

Pros-Cons

Difficult to form joints, facing only for doors etc, Cheap, will not use as I have to form joints, good for knock-down furniture and high batch production. Will need a veneer of paint finish, extra process will increase cost. Low volume production for handmade joints better.

HARDBOARD - This is made from wood fibres that have been pulped. The pulp is put under pressure until the fibres bond to produce a tough board that is smooth on one side and rough on the other. It is not as strong as the other boards.

Pros-Cons

Difficult to form joints, facing only for doors etc, Cheap, may use of backing where will be covered or in the bottom of draws, where hidden or where can be covered easily. Some prefinished hardboard is available for little costs, easy to machine. Covers large areas nicely and cheaply

MEDIUM DENSITY FIBRE BOARD (MDF) - A quality board, relatively cheap. This board is composed of fine wood dust and resin pressed into a board. This material can be worked, shaped and machined easily. Paint can be applied to it without the need for an undercoat or primer. Used in the building and furniture trades.

Pros-Cons

Good to form joints, facing only for doors etc, Cheap, may use of backing where cheap easy to cover material is needed, some prefinished hardboard is available for little extra costs, easy to machine. Covers large areas nicely and cheaply. Dust in machining a factor, health and safety issues for factory employees, sustainable material.

PLYWOOD - This is made from veneers (plies) of timber with each grain layer being at right angles to each other and bonded together by resin and pressure. A number of grades are available, designed to suit a variety of situations.

Pros-Cons

Some prefinished hardboard is available for little costs, easy to machine. Covers large areas nicely and cheaply. Sustainable birch ply is attractive according to end user. Preferred choice. Easy to machine.

Exercise 1. Read and translate the text. Match each paragraph with a heading.

A Advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of metals

B Transparent buildings: problems and possible solutions

C An interesting experiment

1

___________________________________________________________________________________

Building material is any material used for a construction purpose. Building materials can be categorized into two sourses, natural and synthetic. Natural building materials are those that are unprocessed or minimally processed by industry. Synthetic materials are made in industrial settings after human manipulations. Glass is a fashionable material in contemporary architecture. Transparent buildings and structures are very popular in contemporary architecture. Structural glass components such as columns and beams are often required, but this material seems structurally unsafe because of its brittleness. For this reason a new construction technique has been developed using:

• very long overlapping glass segments to create glass beams. These are made by bonding the segments adhesively;

• a small stainless steel profile that has been added to the layout of the glass beam to reinforce it.

2 ____________________________________________________________________________________

To prove that glass structures can be as safe as reinforced concrete, an experimental transparent pavilion has been designed (with dimensions 9 x 9 x 3 .6 m3) that combines a number of innovative ideas. Many different kinds of glass and glass systems have been used. The outermost and the triple-layered insulating glass units have been tempered and sometimes laminated and some glass has also been coated with solar control glass to reflect some of the unwanted sunshine outwards. In other cases glass that can be heated electrically and glass panes free of iron oxide have been used to make the inside light more natural.

3 ____________________________________________________________________________________________

Painted, stainless, hot dip galvanised and weather resistant steel, as well as aluminium, have also been used for supporting structures. Aluminium has some advantages (it is light, resistant to corrosion and easy to work) but also some disadvantages (its thermal expansion and conductivity are high and it has low elastic modulus and fire resistance). Stainless steel also offers some advantages (it has good fire resistance and it is easy to keep) but its high price is a major disadvantage. Both hot dip galvanised and painted steel are not as expensive, but they are difficult to work on site and are not resistant to corrosion.

Exercise 2. Read the text again and decide if these statements are true (T) or false (F).

1 Glass is very popular in contemporary architecture.

2 There is no way to create a glass structure that is as safe as reinforced concrete.

3 A transparent pavilion has been recently designed as an experiment that uses some innovative ideas.

4 There is only one type of glass in this pavilion.

5 Glass has also been used for supporting structures.

6 Hot dip galvanised steel is not resistant to corrosion.
