CLASSES OF OXIDES

Oxygen will combine directly with nearly all elements (silver, gold and platinum are notable exceptions) forming oxides. An oxide is a compound which contains oxygen and one other element only. The four chief classes of oxides are:

Acidic Oxides. All acidic oxides are the oxides of non-metallic elements (but note that not all non-metallic oxides are acidic oxides). An acidic oxide is one which dissolves in water and forms an acid.

A basic oxide is one which neutralizes an acid and forms a salt and water only.

Only four basic oxides dissolve in water. These four react with the water

forming hydroxides. All basic oxides are the oxides of metals (note that not all metallic oxides are bases).

The solutions are termed alkalis and hence the oxides which formed them are known as alkaline oxides.

Higher oxides are metallic oxides which contain a higher proportion of oxygen than the basic oxide, e.g.:

Manganese forms a basic oxide MnO and a higher oxide Mn02, lead forms a basic oxide PbO and a higher oxide Pb02 The characteristic properties of higher oxides are: 1. when they are heated they evolve the ‘extra’ oxygen, Pb02 = 2 PbO + 02;

2. when they are heated with concentrated hydrochloric acid, chlorine is evolved, PbO% + AHCl = PbClt + 2 tf 20 + Cl2.

Neutral oxides are those which do not react with either an acid or an alkali to form a salt and water, and which cannot be placed in any other class of oxide, e.g. water, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrous oxide.

2. Translate into Russian (переведите на русский язык): acid, acidic; base, basic, basic oxides; metal, metallic oxides; monoxide, hydroxide

3. Write the names of chemical substantives (напишите названия химических веществ): S02; S03; H2S03; H2S04; C02; H2C03; P203; H3P03; P205; H3P04; H20

MEASURING TEMPERATURE

There are in general use today four different temperature scales. These are the Fahrenheit, Rankine, Centigrade and Kelvin or absolute. The thermometers are all identically made but each has a different scale. In the United States, the Fahrenheit scale is commonly used in civil life, and the Rankine scale is used by engineers. The Centigrade and Kelvin scales are used in all countries for scientific measurements. It is frequently necessary to change temperature readings from one temperature scale to another.

The first and still most widely used hotness measuring instrument is the simple “liquid-in-glass” thermometer. The volume of liquid expands when hot so that increasing hotness is indicated by extent ion of the column of liquid in the glass stem of the thermometer. The common thermometer uses a liquid as an agent to measure temperature and retains the liquid in a glass bulb. Electrical thermometers are commonly used by lower temperature. These instruments operate upon the principle that the resistance a wire offers to a flow of electric current .stem through it changes with temperature. The higher temperature, the greater is the resistance.

A set of thermocouples, when connected form what is commonly called a thermopile. Thermocouples containing several hundred elements can be made so sensitive that they will detect the heat of a candle flame several hundred feet away.

2. Translate the words in Russian (переведите слова на русский язык): general use, temperature scale, the boiling point of water, molecular motion, civil life, mercury thermometers, temperature readings, room temperature, blood heat, heat measuring instruments, top end, a glass bulb, for these temperature extremes, the temperature recording device, in boiling water, melting point temperature

3. Answer the following questions (ответьте на следующие вопросы): 1. What types of thermometer do you know? 2. Explain the principle of the thermocouple. 3. What is the purpose of barometer’s use?
