Originally the square was called Strastnaya after the Strastnoy Convent, dating back to the 17th century, which stood in the square. But in Soviet times the square was completely reconstructed and named after Alexander Pushkin. The Strastnoy Convent was demolished, several new houses were erected, among them the Izvestia Publishing House.
