School Education In The usa
There are different types of schools and colleges in the US, and there are many differences among them.
American students pass though elementary and high school. About 85 percent of students attend public schools. The other 15 percent attend private schools.
Elementary school usually means grades Kindergarten though at 8. But in some places, elementary schools includes only graded Kindergarten to 6.
Almost every elementary school provides instruction in Mathematics, Language arts, penmanship, science, social studies, music, art, physical education and the use of computers. In some areas, a second language (other than English) is offered in the upper elementary grades.
High school generally means grades 9 to 12. However, in many districts, junior high school includes grades 7 to 9.
Most secondary schools offer the same “core” subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Physical Education. At more advanced levels students can choose some subjects (for example, European history a year of world political issues). Elective courses vary from school to school. Some high schools specialize in business education, or industrial trades, or foreign languages.
High school students can take vocational courses that prepare them to perform specific jobs.
Advanced courses prepare other students for university or college study.
Schools organize all kinds of sport activities. Most schools publish their own student newspapers, and some have their own radio and TV stations. Almost all have student orchestras, bands and choirs, which give public performances. There are theatres and drama groups, chess and debating clubs, Latin, French, Spanish and German Clubs, groups which meet after school to discuss computers, or other topics.
A Typical Day At School In America
I’d like to tell you about the daily activities at our school.
Each day begins at 8 o’clock. Students first go to homeroom, where the homeroom teacher asks, «Who is absent? » and informs the students of any special events. During this time, the principal of our school often makes special announcements over the intercom. At the end of homeroom period, which lasts 10 minutes, the students go to their first class of the day.
At noon the students are gather in a large cafeteria where they purchase their lunch or eat something they brought from home. Most of the students bring sandwiches and buy juice or milk. The cafeteria is a busy place and noisy too, because the students meet with their friends and have a chance to talk.
Each of their classes is 45 minutes long and the school day ends with the 7th period at 2 o’clock but most of the students and the teachers stay at school much longer. Many of students come in to ask questions about their assignment, to get extra help with their lessons, or even just to “chat”.
The day is only half over for athletes who stay for practice of for drama students who rehearse for school plays and musicals. There are also club activities.
The students have their own government at their high school. The students elect representatives to the government. Each grade elects the president, vise-president, secretary and teas-user. They make suggestions about changes in school rules and organize dances and other school activities.
