Модуль 5 вік інтернету. Група неозначених часів у пасивному стані

І. Вправи на формування навичок та вмінь монологічного і діалогічного мовлення.

Вправа 1. Do you use the Internet? Many people who have personal computers at home make use of the Internet. Read the text and try to answer the question: What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet?

THE INTERNET

The Internet is the symbol of the 21st century.

The Internet is a network (several networks, in fact) of millions of computers around the world, connected by phone lines, satellite or cable, so that all the computers on the net can exchange the information with each other. This fast-growing global computer web was first used by the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1960s and had a limited scope. In 1969, the net linked four American universities. Ten years later the Internet became more popular and started to be used by ordinary people. The first WWW (World Wide Web) pages appeared in 1990, and in 1993 the number of people having access to the Internet rose rapidly to 15 million. Nowadays, the Internet is used on a mass scale by about 250 million people all over the world.

The Internet is a very cheap source of communication. It breaks barriers between humans and enables the exchange of information. The world becomes a global village where there are no borders, and where distances do not really matter.

Electronic mail is simple, cheap and quick. It's an ideal way of getting in touch with one’s family, friends or business colleagues in the office.

A very popular way of using the Net is chatting on-line. By joining a chat group or a newsgroup people can share their interests, hobbies and their problems. Young people often spend long hours on chatting and flirting. Some of them make new friends all over the world or even meet their future partners over the Net.

The Net never disappoints people who use it as a place where one can save anonymity and have advice. It's often easier to overcome shyness or shame and talk openly about personal tragedies, problems and feelings.

We can't imagine our life without the Internet. It is a library, university, shopping center, concert hall, bank, post office, travel agency, employment center, doctor's surgery, marriage bureau - all in one. And you can be there and not even leave your home.

Вправа 2. You've learned some information about the Internet. To show how well you understand it do the matching test given below.

9)The Internet is...

Around the world.

i) getting in touch with one's family,

friends or business colleagues in the

office.

Вправа 3. Work in small groups of three. Discuss your attitude towards the Internet. Make use of the following questions:

  1. Have you got a computer at home? ____________________________________

  2. What can you do with your computer? _________________________________

  3. Do you enter the Internet? ___________________________________________

  4. How can you use the Internet? _______________________________________

  5. Do you prefer natural communication or communication through the Internet? _________________________________________________________

Вправа 4. a) Read six opinions expressed by English-speaking teens about computers and Internet.

Sheila: The Internet is very useful. There is more information on the Internet than in the world's biggest library.

Robert: Computer games are great! They're better than TV. On TV you can watch a space ship but in a computer game you can fly a space ship.

Amelia: I don't think children learn much from computers. They can't learn about life from a computer. And they can't do their homework if they play computer games all the time.

David: Computers are bad for your health. I had health problems when I played computer games. In the past children ran around and played sports. Now they just sit at home.

Barbara: A lot of computer games are very bad. There is a lot of shooting and killing. These games are worse than TV. You see bad things on TV, but in computer games you do bad things. It can't be good for growing generation.

Steve: I've got friends all over the world. I've never seen any of them, but I know them all well because we send E-mail to each other. My computer is a door to the world.

b) Decide which of the statements are for computers at home and which are against. First read aloud those for and then - those against. Comment on them.

Вправа 5. You've learned your English peers' opinions on computers, haven't you? Now let's express your own points of view. Agree or disagree with the following:

  1. In computer games you do exciting things.

  2. Children did more sports before.

  3. Some children play with computers nearly all the time.

  4. Children should learn when they play with computers.

  5. You can find more information on the Internet than in the library.

  6. Some games are very bad, because you have to do bad things.

  7. Children don't learn anything if they use computers a lot.

  8. You can use a computer to make new friends.

Вправа 6. a) There is a TV program called "Teens' World". This time the problem of teens' dependence on computers is being discussed in it. An American teenager Clay Smith asks for advice. Listen to his story and answer two questions: Is Clay a computer addict? Is it possible to help him in any way?

"I have been a computer addict since I was ten. I am now fifteen and I can't get rid of my habit. My father constantly tells me to do something

with my life and stay away from computer. I try, but the games are so addictive. These days I play for about twenty-five hours a week. Playing video games stops me from exercising and playing basketball. I have no time for my friends. My schoolwork also suffers because I always do my homework as quick as possible".

b) Here are two points of view on Clay's problem with computer. Read them and decide which opinion you share. If you've got your own viewpoint, express it.

  1. Clay is a computer addict. He plays video games so much that he doesn't have time to exercise or make friends. Computer games make him antisocial so he doesn't have friends who can help him. The games can make Clay violent too. But the real problem is that teens think the games are too much fun. I think the boy needs doctor's advice.

  2. Computer games are fantastic. Teens play them all over the world and they have no problems. Clay is not a computer addict. Because he goes to school and does lessons. His parents can help him easily. They must pay attention to how much time their son spends with computer.

Вправа 7. Let's sum up everything you've learned about computers. Some pieces of information given below come from a consumer magazine. While reading them agree or disagree with their main idea. What do you think about the world of the future?

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE

What will the world of the future be like? Here are some ideas to consider:

О a divided society which has two groups of people: everybody will have free access to computers and information, but some people can and will easily use the computers, while others will not afford to use new technology because they can't understand it.

О a problem of alienation: people who cannot find a place in the technological world of the future. To guard against this problem we need education and training schemes and machines which are easy to use. It's actually very easy to learn how to use the system and once you're on-line, you'll never want to turn the computer off...

Вправа 8. Using all the information you've got so far prepare several short theses that correspond to your point of view on the problem of computerization in modern world in order to be able to discuss it later.

It's high time for you to express your attitude towards computers. Work in small groups of 3 - 4. Make a group opinion on the problem of computers in teens' life. Choose a leader who will write down the group decision and will present it later for the rest of the students. You may use the following outline.

  1. We live in the computer age.

  2. Computers make our life easier.

  3. Advantages and disadvantages of having a computer at home.

  4. The main purposes teenagers use a computer for.

  5. The Internet in teens' life.

  6. Computer games: fun or danger?

  7. Teens' computer addiction.

  1. It's impossible to live without computers in modern technological world.

Вправа 9. What will the world of the future be like? Write down your point of view.

Тема 2

TRAVELING

І. Вправи на формування навичок та вмінь монологічного і діалогічного мовлення.

Вправа 1. Прочитайте текст та скажіть, яким видом транспорту краще подорожувати.

TRAVELING ABROAD

Nowadays traveling abroad is very popular. Some people prefer to travel by plane, especially businessmen, because it's the fastest means of transportation. Those who are not short of time usually travel by train or by ship. It takes more time but gives the opportunity to see the country you travel through, its picturesque landscapes and nature.

While traveling abroad you have to go through customs, sometimes several times. As a rule the customs officers check your passports and visas if they are required. When coming to some countries you may need a health certificate or a certificate of vaccination. If you have anything to declare, then you are to fill in the declaration form.

The customs officers may ask you to show your luggage to them. Usually articles for personal use and wear and also used items and gifts are not liable to duty anywhere. If you are carrying much currency you should also declare it. If you are carrying weapons you need a permit. Although some items are liable to duty, if you carry only a small amount of them, they are duty free.

Occasionally the customs officers may take some of your things for a more detailed inspection but usually they return them soon. Do not try to break the customs rules and regulations because you may have a lot of troubles.

How We Kept Mother's Day

by Stephen Leacock

Part 1

Of all the different ideas that have been started lately, 1 think that the very best is the notion of celebrating once a year "Mother's Day." I don't wonder that May the eleventh is becoming such a popular date all over America and I am sure the idea will spread to England too.

It is specially in a big family like ours that such an idea takes hold. So we decided to have a special celebration of Mother's Day. We thought it a fine idea. It made us all realize how much Mother had done for us for years, and all the efforts and sacrifice that she had made for our sake.

So we decided that we'd make it a great day, a holiday for all the family, and do everything we could to make Mother happy. Father decided to take a holiday from his office, so as to help in celebrating the day, and my sister Anne and I stayed home from college classes, and Mary and my brother Will stayed home from High School.

It was our plan to make it a day just like Xmas or any big holiday, and so we decided to decorate the house with flowers and with mottoes over the mantelpieces, and all that kind of thing. We got Mother to make4 mottoes and arrange the decoration, because she always does it at Xmas.

The two girls thought it would be a nice thing to dress in our very best for such a big occasion, and so they both got new hats. Mother trimmed both the hats, and they looked fine, and Father had bought four-in-hand silk ties for himself and us boys as a souvenir of the day to remember Mother by. We were going to get Mother a new hat too, but it turned out that she seemed to really like her old grey bonnet better than a new one, and both the girls said that it was awfully becoming to her.

Well, after breakfast we had it arranged as a surprise for Mother that we would hire a motor car and take her for a beautiful drive away into the country, Mother is hardly ever able to have a treat like that, because we can only afford to keep one maid, and so Mother is busy in the house nearly all the time. And of course the country is so lovely now that it would be just grand for her to have a lovely morning, driving for miles and miles.

But on the very morning of the day we changed the plan a little bit, because it occurred to Father that a thing it would be better to do even than to take Mother for a motor drive would be to take her fishing. Father said that as the car was hired and paid for, we might just as well use it for a drive up into the hills where the streams are. As Father said, if you just go out driving without any object, you have a sense of aimlessness, but if you are going to fish, there is a definite purpose in front of you to heighten the enjoyment.

So we all felt that it would be nicer for Mother to have a definite purpose; and anyway, it turned out that Father had just got a new rod the day before, which made the idea of fishing all the more appropriate, and he said that Mother could use it if she wanted to'; in fact, he said it was practically for her, only Mother said she would much rather watch him fish and not try to fish herself.

So we got everything arranged for the trip, and we got Mother to cut up some sandwiches and make up a sort of lunch in case we got hungry, though of course we were to come back home again to a big dinner in the middle of the day, just like Xmas or New Year's Day. Mother packed it all up in a basket for us ready to go in the motor.
