Text 1. Co. & Corp. (Companies and Corporations)
1. Nissan Motor Co., LTD. Nissan established a small trading company in 1969. It imported cars from Japan and sold them in the UK. The company only grew 0.2% of the market in 1970 but it was fast. By 1974 it had the UK’s leading car importer.
When the UK became a major export market, Nissan decided to build an assembly plant. After a long search it found a suitable site in Tune and Wear. Cars began rolling of the production line in 1986.
At first, the plant had to limit production because of the LAMA import restriction agreement. But by 1988 UK companies achieved the majority of components and Nissan supplied the target of 60% local content. The plant was able to increase production.
In 1991 Nissan was a new distribution company and it launched (to launch – запускать) operations in January 1992 with a network of 150 dealers. By the end of the year there were 267. Nissan set up the Micra (March) in 1993 and it won the European Car of the Year Award. It was the first Japanese-badged car ever to win.
2. International Business Machines Corp. (IBM). Big Blue was incorporated in 1911 under the rather inelegant name Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co. It produced scales, adding machines and other business equipment. CTR became IBM in 1924. In the 1950s, IBM made an entry into electronic computers. It dominated that market till the early 1980s when its position was challenged (to challenge – вызывать) by the rise of personal computers. Since then, under new management, IBM has laid off (to lay off – увольнять) tens of thousands of workers, refocused its products and returned to profitability, though it hasn’t returned its former dominance.
3. Coca-Cola Co. Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton brewed (to brew – заваривать) Coca-Cola in 1886, advertising it as a tonic for lots of illnesses. In 1891, pharmacist Asa Candler bought the company for $2,000 and promoted (to promote – продвигать) the beverage (напиток) as a soft drink. Coke’s huge business was put into service in 1894 when it started selling the beverage in bottles. In 1919, the company was bought by Atlanta banker Ernest Woodruff for $25 million. His son, Robert W. Woodruff was soon appointed president. During six decades of successful leadership he built the company into a market giant.
