World health organization

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that acts as a coordinating authority on international public health. Established on 7 April 1948, and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the agency inherited the mandate and resources of its predecessor, the Health Organization, which had been an agency of the League of Nations.

Constitution and history

The WHO's constitution states that its objective "is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health."[1] Its major task is to combat disease, especially key infectious diseases, and to promote the general health of the people of the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is one of the original agencies of the United Nations, its constitution formally coming into force on the first World 1 Health Day, (7 April 1948), when it was ratified by the 26th member state.[2] Prior to this its operations, as well as the remaining activities of the League of Nations Health Organization, were under the control of an Interim Commission following an International Health Conference in the summer of 1946.[3] The transfer was authorized by a Resolution of the General Assembly.[4] The epidemiological service of the French Office International d'Hygiene Publique was incorporated into the Interim Commission of the World Health Organization on 1 January 1947.

Activities

As well as coordinating international efforts to monitor outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as SARS, malaria, and AIDS, the WHO also sponsors programs to prevent and treat such diseases. The WHO supports the development and distribution of safe and effective vaccines, pharmaceutical diagnostics, and drugs. After over 2 decades of fighting smallpox, the WHO declared in 1980 that the disease had been eradicated - the first disease in history to be eliminated by human effort.

The WHO aims to eradicate polio within the next few years. The organization has already endorsed the world's first official HIV/AIDS Toolkit for Zimbabwe (from 3 October 2006), making it an international standard.

In addition to its work in eradicating disease, the WHO also carries out various health-related campaigns — for example, to boost the consumption of fruits and vegetables worldwide and to discourage tobacco use.

Лечебный и педиатрический факультеты

I study at the pediatric faculty

I am a first - year student of the pediatric faculty of KSMU. In July I passed entrance exams successfully and was admitted to the University. I was to pass three exams: in Biology, Chemistry and Russian. To tell the truth, I trembled like an aspen leaf but I showed good knowledge in all subjects. I was good at Chemistry and therefore I got an excellent mark. I think 1 didn't have profound knowledge in Biology and I was afraid of that exam. However, I tried to do my best and the examiners were pleased with my answer.

Now I study at the faculty of Pediatrics. We have 30 - 32 hours of studies weekly, including lectures, practical classes, seminars and other classes. We study both theoretical and special subjects. My favourite subject is Anatomy, which is the basis of the medical profession. Sometimes we work in the dissecting-room. We find it very interesting and useful. There are 15 students in my group. Some of them live in the students' dorm. Many of my fellow- students are members of the students’ scientific society. They do research in different special subjects that are of theoretical and practical importance. Most members of the society are senior students and have good knowledge of clinical subjects. As I am fascinated by the human body it’s quite natural that I’ve joined the Anatomy scientific circle. In the second year I’m going to write a course paper in this subject

When my classes at the University are over, I usually go to the library where I read additional literature in special subjects. From the library I usually come back home. I have a short rest and dine. Twice a week I attend my dancing class and on Wednesdays and Fridays I go playing badminton in the gym of our University.

In the evening I read up for my classes. Sometimes it takes me 3-4 hours, especially before the busiest days which are Monday and Thursday. I get tired but I understand that every day which passes by gives me much valuable and necessary knowledge. I consider that a good pediatrician must not only possess theoretical knowledge but he should be able to communicate with children properly as well. That’s why I enjoy reading books devoted to communicating with people and especially books on children’s psychology.
