Poetry.

If I give my heart to you

  1. Jacobs, J. Crane, J. Brewster)

If I give my heart to you,

Will you handle it with care,

Will you always treat me tenderly

And in every way be fair?

If I give my heart to you,

Will you give me all your love,

Will you answer that you’ll be true to me

By the light that shines above.

And will you sigh with me, when I’m sad,

Smile with me, when I’m glad,

And always be as you are tonight.

Think it over and be sure,

Please, don’t answer till you do,

When you promise all those things to me,

Then I’ll give my heart to you.

Pushkin A. S.

1.Pushkin Alexander Sergeyevich is the most important Russian writer of all times, like Shakespeare in England or Dante in Italy. Pushkin provided the standards for Russian arts and literature in the 19th century.

2.Pushkin A. S. was born in Moscow in 1799 into an upper-class family. In 1811 he entered a lyceum at Tsarskoye Selo. The education offered at the lyceum shaped Pushkin’s life.

3.He graduated from the lyceum in 1817 and began to work in the foreign office in St. Petersburg.

4.In 1820 the foreign office transferred Pushkin to Yekaterinoslav and later to Odessa for writing anti-tsarist poetry. In 1824 for his letters against the tsar he was exiled to Mikhailovskoye. In 1824 Tsar Nicholas I allowed Pushkin to return to Moscow.

5.Pushkin fell in love with Natalya Goncharova, who was 16 then, and in 1830 they got married. His wife was suspected of an affair with Baron Georges d’Antes; this became the subject of gossip. Pushkin challenged d’Antes to a duel. Pushkin was wounded and died two days later.

6.Pushkin was Russia’s greatest poet. In his works he was first influenced by 18th century poets and then by Lord Byron. Finally he developed his own style which was realistic but classical in form.

7.His earliest long poem was the romantic “Ruslan and Lyudmila” (1818 – 1820). A series of verse tales followed – “The Prisoner of the Caucasus”, “The Robber Brothers”, “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai” and “The Gypsies”. They were inspired by Byron’s poetry.

8.In 1823 Pushkin began writing his masterpiece “Eugene Onegin”, a novel in verse. “Eugene Onegin” became the linguistic and literary standard. It is a commentary on the life of the early 19th century Russia. It is noted for brilliant verse.

9.He also wrote other long poems, including “Bronze Horseman” (1833), the finest collection of lyrics in Russian literature.

10.Pushkin created also a number of masterpieces in drama and prose. “Little Tragedies” and “The Stone Guest” are among the best works in the world history of drama. Pushkin’s love to Russian Past resulted in his historical drama “Boris Godunov” (1825). “Tales of the late I. P. Belkin”, “Dubrovsky”, “The Captain’s Daughter” are the most important of his prose works. Pushkin’s use of Russian influenced the language of great Russian writers Turgenev, Goncharov, Tolstoy.

11.Pushkin’s early death shocked the country. Pushkin, called by many “the sun of Russian literature”, belongs among the foremost poets and writers of the world.

All the things you are

(J. Kern, O. Hammerstein)

You are the promised kiss of springtime

That makes the lonely winter seem long.

You are the breathless hush of evening

That trembles on the brink of a lovely song.

You are the angel glow that lights a star,

The dearest things I know are what you are.

Some day my happy arms will hold you,

And some day I’ll know that moment divine

When all the things you are

Are mine!

Grammar.

The Passive Voice.

Например, “The tests were written yesterday by the students”. Выражение “by the students” указывает на автора действия. Например, “The letter is written in a gel pen”.

  1. Если автор общеизвестен, например, A new law was adopted (by the government). Новый закон был принят (правительством);

The bicycle was stolen (by somebody).

The book was published (by the publishing house).

To be (в нужном времени и форме)+V3.

Continuous Passive Voice: to be +being+ V3.

Perfect Passive Voice: to have been +V3.

Perfect Continuous Passive Voice

Passive Voice

Is There a Secret of Long Life?

1.Mankind has been seeking to unravel the mystery of long life for more than a millennium, with hundreds of hypotheses and theories being suggested. It has become evident that long life comes from a whole set of factors, such as purely genetic, but also biological factors and, of course, successful social adaptation. Whereas until quite recently long life in the scientific community was the subject of close attention for gerontologists alone, in recent years biologists, ethnographers, ecologists, psychologists and sociologists have also joined in with the research.

2.The distinctive feature of their approach is that rather than examining individual centenarians, the scientists today study entire populations, i.e. large groups, among whom many people have lived long lives, and what is most essential, long lives in these groups have become a regular occurrence in the course of history. Scientists compare “long=living” groups with control populations with shorter lives in the vicinity.

3.Today’s centenarians are people who were as a rule born and lived in one place, without going anywhere, without changing either habits, occupations or diets. Moreover, it has been discovered that the studies played down the role of the psychological factor. We call it “a psychic health factor”. It deserves special attention and can prove to be one of the main reasons for longevity as a regular occurrence. What is it?

4.In the first place, this is what we describe as the gerontophile atmosphere, a socio-psychological milieu of marked respect for the old people. This undoubtedly has a favourable effect on the tonus and optimistic mood among the elderly and maintains their interest in life and longevity as a whole.

5.Secondly, and this is even more important, there are anti-stress attitudes incorporated in society. These are mutual relations which are designed to relieve stress both among individuals and whole groups. The strong family and kinship have a strong positive effect, especially in dramatic situations following death or illness. In other words, we must live without stresses.

So anti-stress behavior is perhaps the most important thing. With time this will enable the geneticists to extend the natural life span. However, we should not really pin our hopes on this. A comprehensive study of longevity can help scientists not so much to increase the time that any human being spends here, on the Earth, as to prolong his active life which is worth living as much as possible.

Always

(I.Berlin)

I’ll be loving you always,

With the love that’s true always,

When the things you’ve planned need a helping hand,

That’s when I’ll be there always,

Not for just an hour, not for just a day,

Not for just a year but always, always.

Grammar. Modal verbs.

1.Модальный глагол can. Прошедшее время could. Эквивалент to be able to (уметь, мочь). I can lift this bag. Или: I can speak English. She can’t have said that. Could you tell me the time, please? В будущем времени употребляется эквивалент to be able to. I shall be able to finish this work by the end of the semester.

Can you translate this song?

2.Модальный глагол may (might). Эквиваленты to be allowed, to be permitted (можно). Этот глагол может означать а) разрешение, например, You may come in. You may not come in. The train may be late by 10 minutes. You might help your mother about the house. You will be allowed to have a break.

Эквивалент to be obliged. Частичные эквиваленты to have to, to be to. I must study for my classes regularly. She must be at home now. Глаголы-эквиваленты to have to и to be to являются самостоятельными модальными глаголами и имеют несколько другой оттенок долженствования. Так, модальный глагол to have to означает вынужденность, «приходится». I have to get up early in order not to be late for my classes. Глагол to be to как модальный означает обязанность по договоренности. We are to meet at the entrance to the theatre. Как вы видите, глаголы to have to и to be to спрягаются.

4. Модальный глагол should (следует)=ought to (моральный долг). You should try the shoes on before buying. You ought to work for the welfare of your motherland.

Например, Need you my help? I needn’t your help. (без вспомогательного do). Do you need my help? I don’t need your help. (со вспомогательным do).

Grammar.

Sequence of Tenses.

Past Simple. (Mother said that she usually waked up (имелось в виду Present Simple, а превратилось в Past Simple) her children at 7 a.m.

I said that I was writing a composition then.

I said that I had written a composition already.

I said that I had been learning English for 5 years already.

He said that he had gone to school a year ago.

He said that he had been writing a composition then.

He said that he had written a composition.

He said that he had been studying English for 5 years, when he decided to take French.

Future-in-the-Past: should/ would+inf.

Future Simple-in-the-Past: He said that he would start learning French.

Future Continuous-in-the-Past: He said that he would be writing a composition then.

Future Perfect-in-the-Past: He said that he would have written a composition by 17.00.

Future Perfect Continuous-in-the-Past: He said that he would have been writing a composition for 2 hours by 17.00.

The child didn’t know that the Earth goes round the Sun.

Mother says that she wakes up children at 7.00.

1.I said that I had just had dinner. 2. Mother supposed that children would soon return from school. 3. The stude4nt knew that the tutor would be asking him again and again. 4. My friend said that she had been cooking cakes since childhood. 5. The doctor said that the patient had a flu. 6. The shop-assistant said that the dress chosen by the customer suited her. 7. The editor didn’t accept the article, because there were many stylistic mistakes in the text.

  1. John said that he (be back) soon. 2. Our grandmother said that she (to cook) a plum cake already. 3. The DJ switched on the song that (to be known) as a hit 20 years ago. 4. The accused man said that he (speak) only to the barrister. 5. Mother asked us not to disturb her, because she (cook) supper urgently. 6. The doctor asked the patient what he (complain) of. 7. The pet dog was barking at the stranger so fiercely that we (not to be afraid) to leave the house.

6. Body and Soul

(J. Green, E. Heyman, R. Sour, F. Eyton)

My heart is sad and lonely,

For you I cry, for you, dear, only.

Why haven’t you seen it – I’m all for you, body and soul.

I spend my days in longing

And wondering why it’s me a-wronging,

I tell you – I mean it, I’m all for you, body and soul.

I can’t believe it, it’s hard to conceive it

That you turn away romance.

Are you pretending, it seems like the ending

And last time can have one more chance to you, dear.

My life is a wreck you are making.

You know, I’m yours for just the taking,

I gladly surrender myself to you – body and soul.
