2.4. Read the information and decide how successful the mix coherency and mix dynamics are in the examples below (1– 5). Use the four Ps or the four Cs to explain your answers:

The most common variables used in constructing a marketing mix are Price, Promotion, Product, and Placement. These are some-times referred to as the four Ps. Each of these ideas can also be seen from a consumer’s perspective. So, Product converts into Customer Solution, Price into Cost, Place into Convenience, and Promotion into Communication. These are the four Cs.

The concept of mix coherency refers to how well the compo-nents of the mix are blended together. For example, a strategy of selling expensive luxury products in discount stores has poor mix coherency between Product and Placement. Mix dynamics refers to how the mix is adapted to a changing business environment, to changes in the organization’s resources and to changes in the prod-uct life cycle.

3. MARKETING METHODS

Text 3

Read the text and discuss the following questions in groups: 1. What information should you analyze for your market re-

search?

2. Does marketing cover only market research?

3. What is the purpose of production’s coordination and goods circulation?

Before selling the goods you must do a lot of market research first. The information you are interested in is if there is any demand for your goods, what the market potential is, what sort of competi-tion you will meet, i. e. how the price of your goods compares with other competitive products including those produces locally, local conditions and preferences, local trading customs and habits, what seasonal factors should be taken into account and the like.

But in general marketing covers not only market research, but also planning the selection (assortment) of goods, and conse-quently the production itself, price policy, advertising and promo-tion of sales, controlling the sales, and post-sales servicing.

So marketing is a system of running all the business activities of a company in respect of coordinating supply and demand for the goods produced. Originally marketing meant to help avoid overpro-duction in industrially advanced countries. Marketing enables to coordinate production and goods circulation (consumption of

0

goods) for the purpose of using all the resources for the benefit of people and for covering in the best possible way all their needs (re-quirements).
