Text 2. Methods of an employee assessment.
The first assessment of an employee starts at the door. Some employers are increasingly utilizing psychological tests that measure a prospective employee’s “ability and personality”.
The psychological tests are designed to measure a correlation between certain psychological characteristics and a desired behaviour which is a peak job performance for employment. The psychological tests depend on the requirements of the position.
The interview process may be extensive, and the candidates are evaluated on many factors, such as, appearance, verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as traditional criteria – education and experience. So, an applicant should pay attention to all of the details at a job interview.
Employee assessment varies from company to company, but the process, rationale and results are similar. Sometimes employers utilize a mixture of qualitative and quantitative assessments. The quantitative assessments are common for sales professionals and usually involve strict numerical goals. The qualitative evaluation programs include personal and professional questionnaires. The personal questionnaire asks questions regarding personal development needs and desires, such as, education, specialized training or goals outside of employment. The professional questionnaire inquires about professional aspirations within the company or industry, performance goals and self assessment of performance and perception of job duties and responsibilities. Qualitative questionnaires explore the factors defining how well the employee works with a team, develops, sustains and promotes customer relations, performs leadership abilities.
There are also more innovative methods of an employee assessment which are utilized by the employers. For instance, IBM East Europe sends an employee every month to a leadership center that IBM maintains in Vienna, where in the process of role plays or simulation of practical business situations an employee’s behaviour and performance are observed, analyzed and improved upon.
It must be admitted that almost all of the employers consider open communication to be the most critical element of employee’s assessment. So, forget the nervous energy when it is time for your review. Stay composed. Be honest about your performance. When a position you are interested in opens up, show your results to your manager. Stable positive results are usually rewarded with promotion.
