2. Ukraine is my Motherland. Geographical position

Ukraine is my Motherland and I`m very proud to live here. So I`d like to tell you about my country.

Ukraine is one of the largest countries of Eastern Europe. It occupies an area of 603 700 km2. Its territory stretches for 893 kilometres from north to south and for 1316 kilometres from east to west. It has state borders with Russia, Belarus and Moldova. It also borders on Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.

In the south it is washed by the Black and the Azov Seas. The major rivers are the Dnieper, the Dniester and others. The Dnieper is one of the longest European rivers and one of the main sources of hydroelectric power In the country. The coasts of the Azov Sea and the Black Sea are good for ports. We have quite a lot of big sea ports, for example, Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Izmail, Mariupol and Kerch.

The major part of Ukraine is flat and only 5% of it is mountainous. The two mountainous areas in Ukraine are the Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains. The geographical position of Ukraine is very favourable because the country lies on the crossroads of the ways from Asia to Europe. Ukraine has deposits of iron, manganese, coal, natural gas, oil and other mineral resources. The main branches of industry are: coal and ore mining, iron and steel engineering, machine and ship building. Besides, Ukraine has always been an agrarian country. Wheat, maize and other corns, vegetables, all kinds of fruit are grown here.

The population of Ukraine is about 50 million people. The biggest cities are Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Lviv, Mykolaiv and others.

Ukraine has an ancient history. It has its own original culture and arts. The country is one of the members of the United Nations Organization (UNO) and participates in the work of many international organizations.

Україна - моя Батьківщина і я дуже гордий, що живу тут. Я хочу розповісти вам про мою країну.

Україна є одною з найкрупніших країн Східної Європи. Вона займає площу 603 700 км2. Її територія тягнеться на 893 кілометрів з півночі на південь і 1316 км. зі сходу на захід. Ця держава граничить з Росією, Білоруссю і Молдовою. Вона також граничить з Польщею, Словаччиною, Угорщиною і Румунією. На півдні вона омивається Чорним і Азовським морями. Головні річки Дніпро, Дністер та інші. Дніпро — одна із найдовших рік Європи й одне з головних джерел гідро електроенергії країни. Узбережжя Азовського і Чорного морів гарні для портів. У нас досить багато великих морських портів, таких як Одеса, Херсон, Миколаїв, Ізмаїл, Маріуполь і Керч.

Велика частина України є рівнинною, і лише 5% доводиться на гори. В Україні 2 гірських райони - Карпати і Кримські гори. Географічне положення України є дуже сприятливим, оскільки країна знаходиться на перехресті доріг з Азії до Європи. На Україні є поклади заліза, марганцю, вугілля, природного газу, нафти і інших корисних копалини.

Основні галузі промисловості: вугільна і гірничорудна, металургійна, виробництво техніки, машин і суднобудування. Крім того, Україна завжди була аграрною країною. Тут вирощують пшеницю, кукурудзу й інші зернові культури, овочі, майже усі види фруктів.

Населення України складає близько 50 мільйонів чоловік. Найбільш крупні міста - Київ, Харків, Запоріжжя, Дніпропетровськ, Одеса, Львів, Миколаїв та інші.

Україна має древню історію. Вона має свою власну самобутню культуру і мистецтво. Країна є одним з членів Організації Об'єднаних Націй (ООН) і бере участь в роботі багатьох міжнародних організацій.
