Columbus was a famous Italian . In the year 1452 , when he was fourteen years old , he went to sea in one of the ships which belonged to an Italian merchant . He visited many different places where he saw some wonderful sights . He was an intelligent boy and he noticed that, as the ship sailed away , the stars changed their places . He began to believe that the world must be round . So , he decided to sail round the world.

At first, no one wanted to give him a ship as they laughed at him . But at last , the king of Spain decided to help him and gave him three small ships . He and the sailors sailed for twenty days without finding any land . The sailors began to be afraid because there was not much food in the ships . They wanted to turn round and go home . But Columbus asked them to continue to travel towards the west for only three days more . Finally , they saw a branch of a tree on the water . They knew that the land was near . They were very glad to walk on land again and put a Spanish flag there.

But what happened to Columbus , the famous sailor who discovered

America in 1492 ? He lived happily for some time , but at last he

quarrelled with some powerful friends of the king . He was put into

prison , and died without any money , without any friends and without

knowing that he had discovered America .
