1. The simplest particle accelerator consists of a glass vessel containing two electrodes to which a potential difference is applied. The particles which must be charged are intro­duced into the tube and are attracted towards one or other of the electrodes, gaining energy as they approach it.

2. Atoms are so small that all our knowledge of their structure and behaviour must be obtained indirectly. The electrons which are responsible for most of the chemical and physical properties of an element are easily displaced or detached and a good deal of information about the outer parts of the atom can be collected by moderately simple techniques. Study of the nucleus is more difficult, for the particles comprising it are very firmly bound together and only the most vigorous disturbance will separate them. A common and fruitful method of investigation is the exposure of suitable targets to bombardment with high-energy particles or radiations and a variety of particle accelerators have been devised for this purpose during the last twenty-five years.

3. Recently much attention has been given to the study of this phenomenon. In this paper new experimental observations are pre­sented and discussed. The data have been obtained, assuming a new model of the mechanism involved, which was suggested in an earlier study by the author. The measurements have been carried out with a conventional apparatus slightly modified by the author. All possible sources of error are taken into account and considera­tion is given to the advantages and shortcomings of the present approach. The results are analysed and the analysis, is followed by a comparison of the data obtained with those available in literature. It is hoped that the disagreement may be accounted for by an im­proved experimental technique of the present investigation.

Особенности перевода причастий и причастных конструкций

Причастие настоящего времени (Participle I) при самостоятельном употреблении выполняет в предложении следующие функции:

- определения, стоящего перед определяемым существительным:

В этом случае оно обычно переводится причастием настоящего времени действительного залога: a flying object – летающий (летящий) объект (предмет), boiling water – кипящая вода;

- определения, стоящего после определяемого им существительного (в этом случае за причастием обычно следуют поясняющие слова):

В этом случае причастие переводятся причастным оборотом или определительным придаточным предложением:

Particles forming an atom are in motion.

Частицы, образующие атом, находятся в движении.

Частицы, которые образуют атом, находятся в движении.

В страдательном залоге Participle I всегда следует за определяемым существительным и переводится на русский язык либо страдательным причастием, оканчивающимся на

–мый или причастием со страдательным значением с окончанием –щийся, либо придаточным предложением:

The compound being treated for two hours change its colour.

Вещество, которое обрабатывается в течение двух часов, меняет свой цвет.

- обстоятельства:

Participle I, выступающее в этой функции, переводится деепричастием несовершенного или совершенного вида, или обстоятельственным придаточным предложением (в тех случаях, когда русский глагол не имеет соответствующей формы деепричастия).

переводится соответствующим придаточным предложением. Причастия given, granted переводятся как если дано; если имеется; при; в том случае, если имеется:

Arranged according to their atomic weights the elements exhibit an evident periodicity of properties.

Если элементы разместить согласно их атомному весу, они демонстрируют очевидную периодичность свойств.

Given certain conditions, such work can be done by everybody.

Если союз в таком причастном обороте выступает в сочетании с причастием действительного залога, то он переводится:

- отглагольным существительным с предлогом при:

When showing the charts the student gave a detailed description of them.

Если же союз в таком обороте выступает в сочетании с причастием страдательного залога, то надо помнить, что подлежащее подвергается действию:

Следует помнить, что слова, оканчивающиеся на –ing или –ed могут быть и прилагательными, т.е. показывать не действие, а качество или состояние предмета. В этом случае они всегда стоят перед определяемыми словами и их значения отличаются от значений причастий. Абсолютная причастная конструкция (независимый причастный оборот) также представляет значительную трудность при переводе. Он имеет собственное подлежащее и в предложении выполняет функцию обстоятельства времени, причины или условия. На русский язык обычно переводится соответствующим придаточным предложением.

The conference being over, the participants discussed the agenda of the next one.

После окончания конференции, участники обсудили повестку дня следующей конференции.

No special cooling arrangements are necessary for small transformers, natural cooling being sufficient.

Word-formation: prefixes of negation.

В английском языке приставки меняют смысловое значение слова. В данном разделе мы рассмотрим приставки, выражающие отрицательное значение. Такие приставки, как un-, in-. im-, il-, ir- в сочетании с основой прилагательных, наречий или причастий означают НЕ:
