Newspaper item 5: Record Industry Turns Fire on Individual Piracy

1. Translate the newspaper item from English into Russian. Use a dictionary.

The US recording industry, struggling to combat declining music sales, is considering legal action against individuals who intentionally allow mass copying of music from their computers.

Until now the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which represents the companies responsible for 90 per cent of all sound recordings sold in the US, has concentrated on 'peer-to-peer' services such as Napster and Audiogalaxy that allow file-swapping.

But the RIAA is now canvassing its members to see if there is an appetite to file suits against individuals, who offer the largest boards of songs on peer-to-peer services.

At the same time, the RIAA is campaigning for the Department of Justice to do more to crack down on those who offer large amounts of music on popular peer-to-peer networks such as Morpheus, which have filled the void left by the closure of Napster.

Eurozone economic growth is likely to ease in the second half of this year after a better performance in the first quarter than official statistics suggest, according to a growth indicator produced for the Financial Times, FT Deutschland and Les Echos.

The indicator compiled by a consortium of European economic research institutes, estimates that year-on-year gross domestic product (GDP) growth will be 1.8 per cent in the third quarter and 1.7 per cent in the fourth.

Overall, annual growth this year is likely to be about 1.5 per cent, at the upper end of the European Central Bank's forecasts.

The main surprise in the consortium's report came from its estimate of GDP growth in the first quarter of this year. According to Eurostat, the European Union's statistical agency, the 12-nation eurozone grew at a quarter-on-quarter rate of 0.3 per cent from January to March. But according to the consortium's indicator, growth in this period was substantially stronger.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment in the eurozone rose to 8.4 per cent in June from 8.3 per cent in May, Eurostat said yesterday.
