The short content of the lesson
Communication is required for cooperation, for interaction between people, so its function is included in language coordination of peoples’ activity. According to means used in communication there are types of communication: speech (oral, written); paralinguistic (gestures, mimics, melody): through signs and objectives (pictures).
Language is the most important mean of people communication.
Speech communication is divided into mono lingual, bilingual and poly lingual communication. This classification depends on number of languages required for coordinating team work. Bilingual and poly lingual communication is rather complex because of its content and structure.Peopleinvolvedinsuchcommunicationmakeupsomesocialcommunity, language community.
According to language, which is used by people in these communities it is necessary to point mono lingual, bilingual and poly lingual communities, personalities.
Language coordinating people activity with the help of two languages makes up specific functional definition of bilingual communication. Bilingual and poly lingual communication isn’t possible without mediator because of difference of languages, cultures. So, translation and interpreting is required be necessity of organizing team work, where two different mono lingual persons are. Therefore translator or interpreter should be bilingual and poly lingual person, who is responsible for organizing peoplesbilingual communication but not their activity
Any communication consists of separate acts. As for translation/interpretation - act of translation, where translator realizes communication between bilingual participants in one direction. But in practice such communication is very seldom observed, may be in written translation. Usually active communication in two direction is required especially in Interpretation (consequent, bilateral and simultaneous).
Communicative act according to T.vanDeik consists of: а) speech act or act of speaker; b) auditing act or act of listener; c) communicative situation, characteristics of speaker and listener, their interrelations.
Act of translation/interpretation can be divided into two communicative acts: а) communication between sender and translator b) communication between translator and receiver. Thisexchangeofrolesessentiallyinfluencestheprocessoftranslation.
The specific difference of translator’s activity included in the following: he combines the functions of addresser and addressee and this is shown in scheme of communicative act, suggested by O.G. Pochepzev, where translator’s activity includes: a) intention on receiving information, b) perception information; c) processing information; d) sending information; e) delivering information. So functions of Translator are changing from recipient (a,b) to interpretation (b,d) and further to producing (d,e).
So in translation act all components are doubled: two sources with their motives and aims, two situations, two speech products and two receivers. Doubling components is a specific peculiarity of translation as speech activity.
Thus bilingual communicative act includes following components: many sources (author, translator, readers and listeners of translation); circumstances of communication (social, cultural, institutional) communication aims, processes of understanding and verbalizing and finally the texts themselves, created and understood as language products.
It’s very important to take into account all these peculiarities while communication in translators activity.
Questions for discussions:
What is the structure of communication in Translator’s activity?
What specific features are in communication in Translator’s activity?
Is Translator a partner of communication and other activity?
