1: Maslenitsa” is one of the ancient Russian holidays. This ancient public holiday had not the regular date in a calendar.
The symbols of “Maslenitsa” are scarecrow, made of straw and cloth, and pancakes, of course. Russian people celebrate it at the end of February or at the beginning of March. They say "good-bye" to winter on these days. Maslenitsa is the most cheerful of all Russian holidays. Not to participate in this holiday means to live in poverty for the rest of the year. Each day of Maslenitsa has its own rituals. People prepare fires and burn straw scarecrows of winter. On Sunday during Maslenitsa, they forgive people for their offences.
2.What an interesting holiday. My name is John. I’m from Scotland. We don’t have such holiday in our country. But sometimes we make pancakes. I’d like to notice that when we make pancakes, all the members of our family take part in it. One person oils the pan, the other – pours the dough into the pan, the third – turns the pancake.
3. What an interesting tradition you have. I’m from England. My name is Michle. We don’t celebrate this holiday, but we also have something kind of tradition. Running competitions are held in England annually. Only women take part in this competition. They must run with a hot pan and a pancake. During the race they throw up the pancake for 3 times and catch it.
4. My name is Liza. I came from Denmark. We have the same holiday, but it is called “Shrovetide”. On “Shrovetide” school children give their friends joke letters without the back addresses. If the boy gets such a letter from a girl and recognizes her, she gives him some chocolate on Easter. At schools different concerts and theatre performances are held.
4- What is your name?
1 - My name is Liudmila.
4 - Where are you from?
1 I’m from Rybnitsa.
4 - Oh, you live here! You know a lot about this holiday! How often do you celebrate “Maslenitsa”?
1- We celebrate it every year
4 - Is it a religious holiday?
1 - No, it is not a religious holiday. It is a national holiday. It is one of the loveliest and happiest holidays a year.
4 - How long does “Maslenitsa” last?
1 -It lasts 1 week.
4 - Is there any special names for each day?
1 -Yes, every day has its own meaning and people have special events.
4- How interesting! Could you tell us about them?
1 -With great pleasure. My friends will help me.
