About my family and myself.
First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Victor Popovych. I am nineteen years old. I study at the Cherkassy Engineering and Technological Institute. I am in the second year. My family lives in Cherkassy in one of the residential areas. My parents have two more kids besides me. Thus I have two an elder brother Olexandr and a younger sister Olga. My sister is a schoolgirl. She is fourteen. My brother is five years my senior. So he is twenty four already. He is a designer by profession. He is married. His wife is a telephone –operator. They are four in the family. He has two children – a son and a daughter. They are twins. They are lovely little kids with golden hair and dark blue eyes.
My parents are not at all. Daddy is forty-seven and my Mum is three years his junior. My grandparents are already pensioners, but they are still full of life and energy. I have many relatives- aunts, uncles, cousins.
My father is an architect and my mother is a hairdresser. They like their work very much.
I am fond of reading books on history and science fiction. I go in for sports. I like playing football, basketball and chess.
In four years i shall graduate from the Institute. To be a good specialist it is necessary to study many general and special subjects. My favorite speciality is electronic computers. In our age of rapid scientific progress and scientific discoveries electronic computing is becoming a branch of economy. It serves as the foundation of economic and engineering progress. Research is impossible without computers.

A lamp –lamps
A train – trains
A bus – buses A box – boxes
Story – stories.
A tomato – tomatoes
A piano – pianos A photo – photos
A wife – wives
A wolf – wolves
A roof – roofs
A chief – chiefs
A safe – safes
A path – paths
A smith – smiths

if there is a holiday his/her family always celebrate together.

Ex. 2.
T. – As you see the generation gap is a problem of all times. People have had this problem for centuries. Nobody has solved it yet trying what they may. Moreover the older generation keeps thinking that the representatives of today’s youth are in no way like the heroes of the past, they are the worst offspring of their brightest fathers. What is your opinion on such point of view?
P1. – There are many debates about youth at present. The first opinion is that modern youngest are infantile, degraded, they know nothing, they want nothing or they want everything but now. The other opinion is that youth has grown ignorant, rute and aggressive. I don’t agree with these opinions. I think that there are still many young people whose hearts ring like bells, who are very enthusiastic and eager to improve their Motherland.
T. – Teenagers and their relations with the adult worth both parents and teachers become more apparent. The struggle for freedom from parents, personal independence and social status among peers affect all young people. What do you think about it?
P2. – It is impossible to solve the problem of “fathers and sons”. It is not so easy, because it’s not a problem of a particular family, but the problem of generations.
P3. – Elder people are in horror for the young generation. They don’t understand young people, or thjey don’t want to, they only criticize it everywhere. They hate our music, our hairstyles, the clothes we wear, our language and the way of behavior – they hate everything we are doing.
P4. – All our problems are because of lack of understanding. Understanding and respect between fathers and sons will come sooner, if they both try to be patient and attentive to each other.
P5. – It’s good when the family is friendly. In a loving family people share joys and sorrows, take care of each other. There’s nothing like home, like a good friendly family in this cruel world.
T. – The teen’s world is a place of extremes. Actually the teengers’ motto is “Everything or nothing”, there is no middle. Indeed home become too narrow place for them. Though home and family are the most important things for children, they also need “street upbringing”. It means they must also mix the other people to involve themselves in their own society and work out their problems. Maybe that’s why they join different grouping or subculture movements to express their individuality.
Ex. 3.
T. – You know that there are 62 federal and interregional youth and children organizations which are officially registered. Now we’ll memorize the well-known subcultures. What subcultures do you remember?
P. – They are Mods, Punks, Hippies, Ravers, Goths, Skinheads, Bikers, Hackers and many others. In Russia the most popular subcultures are Punks, Hippies, Skinheads, Bikers and Hackers.
T. – I think the most popular subculture in our days is Hackers. Who can say about this subculture?
P. – Hackers are persons with extraordinary abilities of the computer. They are people with deep understanding of how their computers work and can do things with them that seems magical to express themselves. They do not protest against their parents.
T. – Well done.

My mother and my father are very different people. Mum is always very calm; she doesn’t get excited. When we were small she almost never shouted to us. When we did something wrong she talked to us very firmly, but in a calm tone of voice. If we shouted and cried she made us go and sit by ourselves in our room until we calmed down.
Dad, on the other hand, shouted and went for a long walk to try to cool off. During the next few days he was cross with us a lot of time, which upset us.

4. a) 3 b) 2 c) 1
5. a) 2 b) 1 c) 3
6. a) 3 b) 2 c) 1
Score 6-10: Oh dear. Are your parents doing their job properly? They are a bit soft, aren’t they? You might think this is wonderful, bur actually you need a few rules in life. Without rules you’ll grow up into a big softie too, and life will be a shock. Ask your parents to give you some rules and start telling you off more often.
Score 11-14: This is good. Believe it or not. Your parents are thinking about you and your future and would life you to grow up happy and normal – and you probably will. It’s a strange world, isn’t it?
Score 15-18; Wow! Your parents are incredibly strict. If they are really strict, then you are a member of a royal family or something, and all these rules are necessary for your safety. If not, try to tell them that you don’t need that much protection. You have to show them hat you can be responsible and that you’re beginning to think and act like an adult. Then they won’t worry so much.
