20.Іменникові атрибутивні словосполучення (кластери). Способи їх відтворення засобами української мови.

Modern English is full of asyndetic noun clusters which are often used in newspapers, journals, scientific and technical texts. They are such word-groups consisting of two, three or more nouns and are functionally equivalent to word-groups.

The House of Commons debates

mother and child care

Estonia business circles representatives.

In many such and the like noun clusters the head components may have a compound noun or a word-group structure.

There are some approaches to translating asyndetic substantival clusters. These approaches are predetermined by the following factors:

1. by the number of nouns making up the cluster;

2. by the structure of the adjunct and head (or both);

3. by the semantic relations between the constituent parts of the ASC (local, temporal or other by nature);

4. by the presence or absence of the preceding adjective, participle, possessive pronoun or ordinal numeral. Translation of two-componental ASC.

1. starting with the head noun:

policy changes – зміна політики;

economy regime – режим економії;

council members – члени ради.

2. starting with the adjunct (functioning as an adjective) or with the head (functioning as a noun);

school reform – шкільна реформа;

student groups – студентські групи;

liberation movement – визвольний рух;

3. in a descriptive way:

two-third majority – більшість у дві-третіх голосів;

top-draw family – родина, що вдягається в дорогий одяг;

the under-16 county match – матч сільських спортсменів віком до 16 років;

rob Peter and pay Paul policy – політика виплати одній категорії за рахунок пограбування іншої.

Translation of three-componental ASC.

1. starting with initial adjunct noun of the N+NN-type sense unit, 1-2-3 order:

London trade unions – лондонські профспілки;

State security police – державна таємна поліція/таємна поліція штату.

2. head noun + initial adjunct noun + adjunct noun of the head, 3-1-2 order:

Attica state prison – в’язниця “Аттіка” (штату Нью Йорк);

в’язниця штату Нью Йорк “Аттіка”.

3. head noun + first adjunct noun, 3-2-1 order:

US Senate seat – місце в сенаті США.

4. adjunct noun + head noun + second noun, 1-3-2 order:

world weight lifting championship – світовий чемпіонат штангістів.

5. starting with the NN-type sense unit and concluding with the initial noun (N), 2-3-1 order:

Manchester housing estate – житловий фонд (масив) Манчестера.

6. the N+NN type may be translated in 3-1-2 order:

the Hertfordshire County Council – рада Гертфордширського графства.

7. in the descriptive way only:

a rubber bullet gun – гвинтівка для стрільби гумовими кулями.

Translation of four-componental ASC.

1. starting with the head noun then in the reverse order to the initial noun adjunct:

The US Defense Department official decision – рішення представників міністерства оборони США.

2. head noun + adjunct + initial noun + second noun:

the Sunday Express newspaper leader writer – автор передових статей “Санді експрес”.

3. in the 4-2-3-1 order the House of Representatives Government Operations Committee – комісія урядових заходів палати представників.

4. in the 4-1-3-2 order:Nobel Peace Prize Winners – лауреати Нобелівської Премії Миру.

5. in the 3-4-1-2 order: Gloucester County Cricket Club – крикетна команда Ґлостерського графства.

6. in the 2-3-1-4 order: Salford West Labour MP Stan Orme – лейбористський член парламенту від Салфорд-Веста, Стен Орм.

7. in the 2-4-1-3 order the 40-nation Geneva Disarmament Conference – Женевська конференція 40 країн (з питань) роззброєння.

8. in the 1-4-3-2 order: Dartmouth Auto Castings Plants – заводи відливків автомобільних заготовок у Дартмауті;

9. in a descriptive way: the National Union of Railwaymen jubilee celebration dinner – святковий обід з нагоди відзначення ювілейної річниці профспілки залізничників (Великої Британії).

Translation of five-, six- and seven-componental ASC.

ASC starts with the head noun. It can/may start with the initial N-component:

London sheet metal workers section -Лондонська філія профспілки робітників металопрокатних підприємств.

- It can/may start with the second sense unit:

The Post Office Workers London district council – Лондонська окружна рада профспілки поштових працівників.

-In a descriptive way:

The City Cooper Square Community Development Committee- Комісія/комітет по переплануванню площі Купера лондонського Сіті.
