At the Рrovision Shop

On my way home I remembered that we had hardly any bread in the house and went to the baker’s for a brown loaf, two white loaves, three rolls and a fruit cake.

At home I made up my mind to go to the Provision Shop to buy some food-stuffs for the whole week, and put them into the refrigerator. I went to the butcher’s. You know that a butcher is a man who sells meat. One of the most nouirishing foods for people is meat, and people eat different kinds of meat: beef, veal, mutton, pork, fowl, game.

Pork is sold salted and dried as ham and bacon. Different kinds of sausages are prepared from pork. The fat of a pig is called lard. At the butcher’s I bought 2 lbs. of beef and half a leg of lamb. Then I called at the grocer’s where I bought a pound of tea, coffee beans, some cereals, rice, ground-coffee and other groceries.

At the greengrocer’s which is also a fruiterer’s, I met my cousin and we did shopping together. We bought some nuts, beans, peas and plums.

On our way home we dropped into the confectioner’s for some sweets and chocolate and at the dairy my cousin took a pound of curd(s), a jar of sour cream and some butter.

When we finished with our shopping we had all our purchases made up into two packages and went home.

Shopping

We have already bought apples and lemons. Yesterday in our greengrocer’s we bought oranges and grapefruits. We are not going to buy any meat in this shop. We have already bought a joint of beef and some pork. We have bought it in the butcher’s. We have not bought potatoes and onions. We’ll be able to buy them later.

We’ll buy some sausage and ham today. As I am fond of fish I hope to buy herring or smoked fish.

Last Saturday I met Borys Lytvynov in this shop. I was surprised to meet him later. There is a nice supermarket not far from their block of flats. And he usually does his shopping there. There is always a wide selection of foodstaffs there.

MEALS IN BRITAIN

The names of meals in Great Britain are: breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. Breakfast in the morning may be cornflakes, taken with milk and sugar, bacon or ham with or without eggs, or some kind of fish. Toast of bread and butter with marmalade and a cup of tea or cofee is also a popular breakfast.

Some people just have toast, butter and cheese with tea or cofee for breakfast. English people usually drink tea with milk and this tea is called "English tea".

In the middle of the day people have different meals. It depends on their jobs and wages. It also depends on what part of the country they live in. People in the north have different tastes from those in the South. Their main cooked meal, whether it's at midday or in the evening, is called dinner. Those who have their dinner in the middle of the day have supper in the evening. Those who have dinner in the evening, have lunch in the middle of the day.For dinner there's always a main dish, consisting usually of meat or fish with potatoes and cooked vegetables.

Lunch or supper is a lighter meal. Many families living in the north eat something like bread and butter with perhaps fried eggs or fried fish and tea in the evening.

Shopping is a part of our daily life. When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, men’s and women’s clothing stores, grocery, a bakery and a butchery. I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient. A department store, for example, true to its name, is composed of many departments: readymade clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cosmetics, linen, curtains, cameras, records, etc. You can buy everything you like there.
