19 (Listening for Partial Comprehension/Selective Listening )

 швидке й безпомилкове сприйняття та розуміння чисел і дат вимагають інтенсивної підготовки, а розуміння власних імен та географічних назв спирається на фонові знання учнів, їх уявлення про ситуацію, предмет та учасників спілкування;

 тексти підбираються учителем заздалегідь, перевіряється необхідна технічна апаратура (за її відсутності текст розповідається учителем);

 необхідний роздавальний матеріал готується заздалегідь і роздається кожному учневі;

 слухання відбувається у класі під керівництвом учителя;

T: Today we were speaking of science and technology. Modern life is impossible without inventions and discoveries. And what would you like to invent or discover?

T: Look at the picture of Samuel Morse. Note his clothes, awards, hairdo. When do you think he lived? Where did he live? What kind of person was he?

T: Let’s train in mathematics a little bit. I’ll tell you some information with dates and you will have to do sums and tell me the exact date of the event. Are you ready? Let’s start then:

1. Nick was born in 1995. When he was seven years old he went to school. When did he go to school?

2. Jane began playing tennis at the age of six. Three years later she stopped playing tennis. Now she is ten. When did she stop playing tennis?

3. Our Granny is 60 now. When was she born? At the age of 17 she finished school. When did she finish school?

T: Listen to two students talking about a famous inventor. Complete the notes with the correct dates. Pay attention that the actual dates are not given so you will need to work out some of the dates.

Samuel Morse: artist and inventor

1. 1791 born

2. …… went to Yale University

3. …… travelled to Europe

4. …… became Professor of Painting

5. …… started work on his electromagnetic telegraph

6. …… given a patent for his ‘telegraph machine’

7. …… sent the first message using Morse Code

8. …... died

Jane: Ah, here it is ‘Samuel Morse: artist and inventor’. What a great photo!

Steve: What does it say about him?

Jane: Let’s see.

Steve: When was he born?

Jane: Hold on a minute! Er, Samuel Morse was born in seventeen ninety-one in Massachusetts

Steve: Seventeen ninety-one. In Mass, how do you spell Massachusetts?

Jane: M-A-S-S-A-C-H-U-S-E-T-T-S.

Steve: What about his education! School? University?

Jane: Erm, he went to Yale University to study Art and Science, just after his fifteenth birthday.

Steve: When he was fifteen! We’ve got to put a date here. So 1791, plus fifteen, that’s er…

Jane: Eighteen oh six.

Steve: And he studied Art and Science?

Jane: Right.

Steve: OK. And, number three. He travelled to Europe, when?

Jane: Five years later.

Steve: Er, that’s eighteen oh six plus five years. So, eighteen eleven, right?

Jane: Yes, and it says here that he spent most of his time in England.

Steve: I wonder why? Perhaps he couldn’t speak any other languages.

Jane: Well, he returned to America four years later, because he had no money.

Steve: Oh, right.

Jane: Oh, this is interesting. I thought he was only an inventor. But he was an artist as well. He became Professor of Painting in eighteen thirty-two.

Steve: Where?

Jane: Um, professor of Art at, er, New York University.

Steve: New York University.

Jane: But there’s something here about five years after he became Professor.

Steve: OK. What does it actually say?

Jane: Mm. ‘Five years later, Morse stopped painting’.

Steve: I wonder why.

Jane: Money problems again. He wasn’t getting enough money. That’s what it says here. Anyway he started work on the elec, er, electroma – oh the something telegraph.

Steve: Electromagnetic telegraph, OK, I’ve got that one then.

Jane: What’s the next one about?

Steve: Er, ‘given a patent for his “telegraph machine”’.

Jane: Given a patent? Er, is says here that that was in, er, er, eighteen forty-three.

Steve: One eight four three.

Jane: Right. Morse was given a patent for his ‘telegraph machine’ by the United States government in 1843. Then it says ‘One year after he was given the patent, he sent the first message using Morse Code to Washington DC’.

Steve: So the first message was sent one year after he got the patent. To Washington DC. I wonder what the DC stands for?

Jane: No idea. Anyway, they built the statue for him in eighteen seventy-one.

Steve: A statue? Where, in Washington?

Jane: Don’t know, but he died just one year later. A year after they’d built the statue. What a pity!

Steve: Right. That’s the last one. Now, for this project, we’ve got to learn the Morse Code. How to understand and send messages. It’s all dots and dashes.

Jane: Oh right. Here it is then. Dot Dash Dash Dot Dot Dash Dot Dash Dot. That’s ABC!

Steve: Let me have the book. I want to do it too!

T: So we’ve just finished listening to the information about the inventor. Let’s check up the main dates of his life.

The right answers:

1. 1791 born

5. 1837 started work on his electromagnetic telegraph

6. 1843 given a patent for his ‘telegraph machine’

7. 1844 sent the first message using Morse Code

8. 1872 died

T: And now let’s read the following questions:

1. Which state was Samuel Morse born in?

2. Which two subjects did he study at Yale University?

3. Which European country did he spend most of his time in?

4. Why did he return to America?

5. At which university did he become Professor of Art?

6. Why did he stop painting?

7. Who gave Morse the patent for his ‘telegraph machine’?

8. Which city did he send his first Morse Code to?

T: Now listen to the conversation again and answer the questions we have just read in note form.

T: Now that we finished listening, answer the given questions in note form.
