But the voice which had the false fifth, usually ascends after the same to resolve it, as to be seen in the following example, where the bass either rests together with another accompannying upper voice, ZZZ, DD, EE or descends with two diminished notes, AA, BB, CC.

On the false fourth.

The false fourth is twofold, namely the quarta superflua or large false fourth, which is also called tritonus as it contains three notes, and the quarta diminuta or quarta minor, the small false fourth.

31

Wie der Tritonus oder die große falsche Quart soll genomen werden, aufgelost¨ und mit andern Consonantien accompagniert werden, haben wir schon pag.: 17 genugsamb demonstriert;

How the tritonus or the large false fourth should be taken, be resolved and accompagnied with other consonances, we have already su ciently demonstrated pag. 17;

and that the small false fourth is used syncopated instead of the rigth one, we have already mentioned pag. [33] and we have given an example under the letter XXX.

To see further characteristics and accompaniment of this minor fourth even better, the following note is left to tell.

Firstly, that since this small fourth can be used instead of the right one in di erent manners, it should be treated in tieing or striking, resolving and accompanying as the good fourth, with that di erence that where the good one is accompnied by a good fifth, this small fourth is taken with a small minor fifth, and where the right fourth would have been allowed to be doubled, the small false fourth can be admitted only singly, and it does not accept the octave, except in a very full Grie .

Nous avons d´ej`a demonstr´ su samment en page 17 comment on attaque, r´esout et accompagne le tritonus ou la grande fausse quarte;

And it exists as quarta consonans or sweet fourth, FF, as quarta dissonans supersyncopata or upper tied fourth, GG, as quarta subsyncopata or lower tied fourth, HH, and as quarta transiens, passing fourth, LL.

Note: except with very full Grie it does not accept the octave.

Die eintzige kleine Sept, Septima diminuta genant, kann in der Partitur gebraucht werden;

On the false seventh.

There is one small seventh, called septima diminuta, which can be used in the score;

with this, all rules have to be observerd which have been given about the right seventh pag. 27, except that, where with the good seventh one finds the right fifth, here instead the small false fifth has to be taken, and finally that those false sevenths cannot be joined easily by the octave, which otherwise can often be used very comfortably and sweetly together with the right seventh.

De la fausse septi`eme

Une seule petite septi`eme, appell´ee septima diminuta, peut ˆetre utilis´ee dans la partition;

Diese wird von wenigen Meistern approbirt, doch aus einiger Licenz von etlichen Italianern und sonst beruhmbten¨ authoribus in A ecten und Stilo recitativo an stat der rechten Sext major auf folgende Weiß gebraucht;

On the false large sixth.

It is applied by only few masters, but is used by some Italians and other famous authors as licence in a ects and in the recitative style instead of the right major sixth in the following way;

but it does not accept the octave but only the single or doubled third.

The sexta superflua is resolved by gradually ascending.

Auß den grobsten¨ Fallern,¨ so man in der Composition oder Partitur begehen kann, ist be¨y denen Gelehrten dieser Kunst, wann man mi contra fa, das ist, mi gegen fa sezet oder schlaget;

All other imaginable false dissonances are so unsupportable for the ear that they cannot be used anywhere in an ordered composition and regular score.

On the chromatic Grie en or chords, and firstly on the mi contra fa.

For the scolars of this art it is among the worsest mistakes one can make in the score, when one puts or plays mi contra fa, i.e. mi against fa;

on one hand this is common rule for all the musicians with little experience, but on the other hand it is not so universal and fatal than some [of] them think, and only by few this is understood with all concerning circumstances and exceptions.

The interdiction, not to put mi contra fa, has to be understood in the way that one should not put a false dissonance at the place of a right consonance due to ignorance and with greatest o ense of the ear, as for example:

that in the bass would be a \ mi and one would have taken the 2 fa in a upper voice

or if the bass would have 2 fa, and in the upper voice would have been put a \ mi, so that these would be a dissonant false octave which is unsupportable for the ear; the same happens also when there is a note without a sharp ] in some voice and in another the same note would be played with a ] sharp.

36

Nun pflegt dieser grobe Faller¨ am meisten zu geschehen, wann man in den Octaven oder in denen Quinten oder auch in denen Quarten sich irret und vergist, also, daß an stat der guten und gerechten man [p. 41] die falsche und ungerechte nimbt, nemblich die umb ein halben Ton semitonium minus entweder zu groß oder zu klein seyn, und zwar, was die falschen Octaven anbelangt, seynd selbe niemahls zu entschuldigen;

This fault happens most often when one is mistaken in the octaves and fifths or also in the fourths and instead of the good and right, one takes the false and wrong, namely those which are either too small or too big by one half note semitonum minus, and in the case of the octave this is never to be excused;

the false fifth and fourth except as we have shown how to use them in certain cases and respecting certain rules are also depraved, what is more, the false octaves are not only totally forbidden against the bass, but also amongst the upper and inner voices, but the false fifths and fourths may sometimes occure in the upper and inner voices, as to be shown later.

Now follow some disgusting examples of those false dissonances in which mi contra fa has been put;

by mi the scolars of the art mean the \ mi or hard notes which have a ] or diesi, but by fa the 2 mollia or other soft notes.

In any false interval one finds always two such contrary notes, namely one which is dur (hard) and the other which is moll or soft, thus it is called mi contra fa.

On commet le plus souvent cette erreur lorsqu’on s’est tromp´e dans les octaves ou dans les quintes, ou aussi dans les quartes, en mettant `a la place de la bonne et juste la fausse et injuste, c’est-`a-dire celles qui sont soit trop petites soit trop grandes d’un demi-ton semitonium minus; en ce qui concerne l’octave, ceci n’est jamais pardonnable;

Ci-dessus, quelques exemples d´esagr´eables dans lesquels on a mis mi contra fa;

Wann aber die Terz minor ist, die Sext aber major, so ist es chromatisch, dann die beede obere Stimen machen gegeneinander entweder ein falsche große Quart, C, oder ein kleine falsche Quint, D;

Once there is mi contra fa in some permissible way in a chord, except the octave, this Grie becomes chromatic since in such case one normally uses almost always one chromatic touch foreign diesis or halfnote.

Each Grie in which already a false dissonance against the bass is to be found, is by itself chromatic, but in other Grie whithout a false interval against the bass the chord can be considered as chromatic between the upper and inner voices once at the intervals contained therein the two opposed terms or words major and minor are to be found, as to be seen clearly in the following examination of each chord.

The common chord cannot have anything chromatic because it is the purest and most perfect, which does not permit any false intervals neither against the bass nor between other voices.

Sextilis, the Grie which we call sextilis, is diatonic or natural if both third and sixth are major at the same time, A, or minor at the sime time, B.

But when the third is minor and the sixt major, then it is chromatic since the two upper voices mutually form either a false large fourth, C, or a false small fifth, D.

thus, it sounds very nice if the major sixth ascends and the minor third descends in the following grip, C, D.

Even stranger and more chromatic sounds the sextil when one plays together the major third and the minor sixth, then these two intervals cause either a small false fourth, E, or a false large fifth, F, between the upper voices.

Thus, in the following Grie the major third should

But when more sextil or sixth chords follow each other, one does not pay so much attention on the resolution of the mentioned thirds and sixths because the necessity and harmony demands often that the major thirds and sixth descend while the minor move upwards, as in the examples, H.

Examples of the di erent sextilis.
