Wood for fuel should always be purchased by volume, unless a strict specification for its moisture content is laid down. Otherwise there is a temptation for the vendor to sell it in as wet, and therefore as heavy, a condition as possible. Fuelwood has traditionally been sold by the cord (a volume equal to 8 x 4 x 4 feet,) in this country and in France by the stere which equals a cubic metre.

During the Second World War when petrol was scarce in many countries wood was used as a source of fuel for motor engines. By destructive distillation the greater part of the potential energy of wood can be converted into so-called 'producer gas', a flammable mixture consisting mainly of carbon monoxide and hydrogefi. In Germany in the late thirties it was not uncommon to see filling stations supplying wood fuel for lorries (Holztankstelle)

Acoustic Properties

Wood is used for many musical instruments as it is a very resonant material that vibrates when activated by sound waves to give a pleasing sound. One of the simplest uses is in the xylophone where strips of a dense wood of differing lengths arc struck to give notes of differing pitch.

Uniformity of texture resulting from an even growth, and freedom from knots, are the important qualities sought for in timber to be used for musical instruments. The sounding board of a piano is generally made of finest quality spruce, and this wood, usually from Rumania, has also traditionally been the one most prized for making the belly of violins, while maple is used for the back. For wind instruments stability under varying conditions is a most important quality. Cocuswood from the West Indies was the timber of choice for clarinets etc. on account of its fine uniform texture, oily nature, and handsome dark appearance.

If wood is fixed firmly so that it cannot vibrate it absorbs sound waves and does not reflect them. For this reason its use as panelling in concert halls reduces echoes and improves acoustics. It was also largely for this reason that wood blocks were laid in the streets of London and other large towns in the days when the noise came mostly from the iron-shod hooves of horses before the coming of the internal combustion engine.

Structure of Hardwoods

The structure of hardwoods is more complex than that of softwoods and the elements that compose the wood are more varied.

In hardwoods the conduction of sap takes place through long tubes known as 'vessels', while the mechanical strength is provided by fibres. Vessels are formed similarly to a drain pipe out of several cells. In cross-section these appear as round openings or 'pores'. These pores vary greatly in size. In some woods, such as oak, that have a coarse texture they are just visible to the naked eye, in others they are microscopic.

Most of the mechanical strength of the wood is derived from the fibres, which are long, narrow, thick-walled cells with pointed ends. Therefore the density and strength of a timber depends to a large extent on the quantity of fibres it contains. Some hardwoods, oak for example, contain tracheids similar to those in softwoods and while these act as conducting tubes they also contribute to the strength of the wood. In addition there is in the wood of broad-leaved trees more storage tissue, than in softwoods.

The rays in many hardwoods, which arc much more conspicuous than in softwoods, may occupy a fifth or more of the total volume of the wood. While the rays in softwoods are usually only one cell wide, the majority of hardwoods has more than one cell in width. Timbers like oak and beech that have very wide rays tend to split easily along the grain, but the rays give a pleasing figure to wood that has been cleft or sawn radially
