The Sun attracts the planets. –

Pushkin wrote “Poltava” in 1828.

The planets are attracted by the sun. –

“Poltava” was written by Pushkin in 1828.

Passive voice structures

to be (в соответствующей форме) + Participle II

1) в предложении с глаголом в действительном залоге дополнение служит подлежащим в предложении с глаголом в страдательном залоге;

2) глаголу в действительном залоге соответствует глагол в страдательном залоге в том же времени;

This bridge was built in 2001.

The paper was cut with a knife. –

Сказуемому, выраженному сочетанием одного из модальных глаголов can (could), must, may (might), should, ought, to have, to be с неопределенной формой действительного залога, соответствует в страдательном залоге сочетание того же модального глагола с неопределенной формой страдательного залога

Например.

We must finish work in May.

You can buy this book in any bookshop.

Our work must be finished in May.

This book can be bought in any bookshop.

Nick gave me a dictionary

I was given a dictionary

A dictionary was given to me

They listened to her with interest.

He was laughed at.

She was listened to with interest.

Exercise 7.

Jurisprudence

Jurisprudence is the theory and philosophy of law. Scholars of jurisprudence, or legal philosophers, hope to obtain a deeper understanding of the nature of law, of legal reasoning, legal systems and of legal institutions. Modern jurisprudence began in the 18th century and was focused on the first principles of the law of nature, civil law, and the law of nations. General Jurisprudence can be broken into categories both by the types of questions scholars seek to address and by the theories of jurisprudence or schools of thought regarding how those questions are best to be answered. Contemporary philosophy of law, which deals with general jurisprudence, addresses problems in two rough groups:

1) Problems internal to law and legal systems as such.

2) Problems of law as a particular social institution as it relates to the larger political and social situation in which it exists.

Answers to these questions come from four primary schools of thought in general jurisprudence:

Natural law is the idea that there are rational objective limits to the power of legislative rulers. The foundations of law are accessible through human reason and it is from these laws of nature that human created laws gain whatever force they have.

Legal Positivism, by contrast to natural law, holds that there is no necessary connection between law and morality and that the force of law comes from some basic social facts although positivists differ on what those facts are.

Legal Realism is a third theory of jurisprudence which argues that the real world practice of law is what determines what law is; ie the law has the force that it does because of what legislators, judges, and executives do with it.

Critical Legal Studies is a younger theory of jurisprudence that has developed since the 1970s which is primarily a negative thesis that the law is largely contradictory and can be best analyzed as an expression of the policy goals of the dominant social group.

Lesson 5 Travelling

Exercise 1.

How we travel

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays traveling. They travel to see other continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy themselves, or just for a change of scene. It’s always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms. Those who live in the country like to go to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at exotic restaurants. City-dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains by themselves, with nothing to do but walk and bathe and laze in the sun. Most travelers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them - the sights of a city, old churches and castles, views of mountains, lakes, valleys, plains, waterfalls, forests; different kinds of trees, flowers and plants, animals and birds. If people have business trips they choose the fastest transport. They often travel by plane or by train. It is very expensive but it is very fast. And if people want to have a rest they choose traveling by boat, by car, on horseback and etc. When you travel by car or by bike you can stop where you want. All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. And people choose one according to their plans and destinations. If we are fond of traveling, we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home, though we may read about them in books and newspapers, and see pictures of them on TV.

I myself am a fan of traveling. I think that the best way to study geography is to travel, and the best way to get to know and understand people is to meet them in their own homes.
