Ecology is a very popular word today. It means "home" in Greek. The idea of "home" includes the whole planet. Do we live a happy and healthy life? Unfortunately, not. Our plants and factories waste materials into water and atmosphere and pollute the air we breathe. We all know about the holes in the sky and the greenhouse effect.

Sunlight gives us heat. Some of the heat warms the atmosphere, during the last 100 years we have produced a huge amount of carbon dioxide. It works like the glass in a greenhouse. It allows heat to get in, but doesn`t allow much heat to get out. We produce carbon dioxide when we burn coal, oil, petrol gas and wood. People have burned huge areas of rain forest. It means there are fewer trees and more carbon dioxide. The hole in the ozone layer has become so large that it causes sunburn and skin cancer. Sea levels have already risen by 15 cm since 1880. The amount of traffic is another problem. Many cities are heavily congested. Doctors say health problems in towns are increasing. Extinction is another serious problem which we should all worry about. The species of some animals are very rare today.

So, the question is: what should we do to protect our "Home"? Firstly, we should restore damaged ecosystems by planting trees on land where forests have been cut down. The slogan "Do not harm much!" should be put everywhere. Secondly, think about alternative energy provided by wind. Natural alternative energy does not cost you a thing. Then, the livestock must be reared without the use of antibiotics and the use of growth hormones. People should be taught to collect, recycle and utilize waste. Big cities are drowned in their litter. Triple coloured containers for glass, paper and plastic bottles are being put in the parks and streets of our cities. The work of scrap-heaps should be organized better. "Let`s give the second chance to wastes!"- is a strategy for separate collection.
