Washington is a great place to walk around. It is the capital of the United States and is situated in the district called the D.C. - District of Columbia (named after Christopher Columbus). It got its name after George Washington who chose this place to be a capital. George Washington asked a French architect and a city-planner Pierre L´Enfant to design the capital city. It was the first city in the world to be designed and planned as the capital. The city is not a very large city. The area of Washington is not very big and the population is a little more than 1 million people.

Washington is known for its historical monuments and important building, including the Capitol, the White House, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial. The president of the United States lives in the White House.

The White House is the residence of the US president and his family. White House has 132 rooms! You can visit and see only 54 rooms where ex-presidents (former presidents) lived and worked.

The White House is America’s oldest federal building. George Washington, the first US president, helped to lay the building’s first stone in 1792. But he didn’t live there. Only John Adams, the second president of the United States, was the first president to live in the White House.
