Герундиальный комплекс the gerundial complex

(Construction with the Gerund)

Сочетание герундия с существительным в притяжательном или общем падеже, притяжательным местоимением, личным местоимением в объектном падеже или группой слов, которые являются субъектом действия, выраженного герундием, составляет единое целое (сложный член предложения) и может выступать в тех же функциях, что и герундий.

Развивается тенденция избегать использование перфектных форм герундия:

I'm so grateful for his helping me out.

I'm so grateful for his having helped me out.

Герундиальный комплекс обычно переводится на русский язык придаточным предложением, вводимым словами то, что ... , тот факт, что..., (с тем) чтобы..., после того как...,что... и др.

– I'm against your going there alone.

– Я против того, чтобы вы пошли туда один.

– All that was after their leaving the place.

– Все это случилось после того, как они уехали.

• Ex. 3 Combine the following by means of a prepositional complex consisting of a noun and gerund

Model: The outer door was opened and that startled her.

1 She was startled by the outer door being opened.

2 The children came in and that disturbed him.

3 Henry was put in charge of the party, but the doctor objected to that, saying he was physically unfit for such a job.

4 The students were highly enthusiastic about the dramatic society and that pleased us very much.

5 Mr. Tupman was put to bed and the doctor send for. That was how the affair ended.

6 Her father might get to know about the affair from the newspapers sooner than she could inform him . She had overlooked that possibility.

• Ex.4 Translate into English. Use the complex only if the gerund has a subject different from that of the sentence

Простите, что я вас прерываю, но мне спешно ( urgently ) нужна ваша помощь. Он ушел не попрощавшись.

Я полагаюсь на то, что это письмо будет отослано вами вовремя. Я вполне понимаю, что вы были против этого предложения. Я сделаю все до того, как он вернется. Терпеть не могу возражать и спорить. Терпеть не могу, когда ты возражаешь и споришь. Она была так благодарна, что ее взяли тоже. Я не помню, чтобы я вас видела раньше. Я отвечаю за то, чтобы все было в порядке. .Избегайте употребления неопределенного артикля перед существительным "weather".

Эти факты не стоит упоминать, вам следовало бы достать более надежные ( reliable ) сведения.
