CHAPTER 3. ACTIVITIES
Focus
Describe the life on the farm after the Rebellion. Are the animals happy at getting rid of Mr Jones? If so, why? If not, why not?
What differences can you mention in the life of the animals on the farm after the Rebellion compared to "Jones's time"?
What difficulties did the animals meet with? How did they overcome them?
Follow-up
"How they toiled and sweated ... " Do these words suggest that the animals were happy in their new-found freedom from human control?
Which animals have changed and which animals have not changed since "Jones's time"?
Describe different attitudes to work and labour among the animals on the farm. How hard did the animals work (mention Boxer, the hens and ducks, Mollie, the cat, Old Benjamin the donkey). Draw parallels with the Soviet period in Russia.
What rituals and ceremonies were introduced and observed on the farm? Describe them and say if they remind you of any similar ceremonies in the former Soviet Union.
What distinguishes the pigs from the other animals? Comment on the status and privileges of the pigs on the farm. Do you agree with Squealer's justification of their behaviour.
What is the purpose of Snowball's organization of "Animal Committees"? Again, draw parallels with the Soviet period.
What does the Snowball declare to be "the essential principle of Animalism"? Who objects and why? Do you think this is an accurate summary of the Seven Commandments? If not, why not?
Do you agree that it is the right thing to reduce a complete system of thought to a single maxim to make it more understandable to everybody? What consequences it might have?
