The profession of a speech therapist
I'm a first-year student of the Volgograd State Pedagogical University. I've chosen special-corrective pedagogy as my future profession. Our faculty is divided into a number of departments. Education is provided in many specialties.
In the near future I'll graduate from the university and become a speech therapist. This profession has always been one of the most honorable and of great responsibility.
Speech is one of the primary ways we communicate with our environment. Communication includes speech (for example, articulation, intonation), language (phonology, including reading and writing) and non-verbal such as facial expression and gesture. Speech is also an effective way to monitor normal growth and development as well as to identify potential problems. Speech disorders include several speech-related problems that result in impaired or ineffective oral communication. Disfluencies are rhythm disorders that are usually characterized by the repetition of a sound, word, or phrase. Articulation deficiencies involve sounds made incorrectly or inappropriately. Voice disorders involve abnormalities in the quality, pitch and loudness of the sound.
Speech therapy is the corrective treatment of physical and cognitive disorders resulting in difficulty with communication. Depending on the nature and severity of the disorder common treatment may include physical exercises, instructive practice and drilling, audio-visual aids, and even specialized computer programs. It may also include using sign language (hand and body movement) or special board with pictures and words. Speech therapists help those people communicate who don't speak clearly. They work with babies and children who has learning difficulties, physical disabilities, specific difficulties in producing sounds, voice disorders and so on. They also help adults with communication problems following different diseases.
Speech therapists may work in community health centers, hospitals and special schools. They also work closely with parents and other professionals, such as teachers, nurses and doctors.
