A PICNIC ON THE MOSCVA RIVER BANK

People spend weekends in different ways. Some go out and see their friends, others go to the theater, others like to stay at home and read something or watch television. Most of the people, however, like going out of town for the weekend. None of them likes staying at home when the weather is nice. They may go for a hike somewhere or may go boating or swimming.

As for George and Mary Bobrov and their children Peter and Helen, they like to spend summer weekends out of town.

Last Sunday they invited Mr. and Mrs. Nelson who were on a visit in Moscow to join them for a picnic. James and Jane Nelson gladly accepted their invitation. When the Bobrovs got up on Sunday morning, the sky was blue and the sun was shining brightly.

After breakfast the Bobrovs started getting ready for a picnic. While Mrs. Bobrov and Helen were making sandwiches and packing food Mr. Bobrov and Peter were putting things into the trunk.

At 9:30 they got into the car and drove to the hotel where Mr. and Mrs. Nelson were staying. James and Jane were waiting for them outside the hotel. The day was beautiful and they did not want to sit in the lobby. The Nelsons got into the car and off they drove.

They passed by the villages and woods and at last they came to the Moscva River bank, to their friends favorite place. The place was really beautiful: there was a big oak tree on the river bank and a birch grove a few feet away.

Peter put the blankets on the grass and they lay down in the shadow of the oak tree as it was getting hot.

The water was warm and all of them went for a swim. Afterwards everyone felt hungry and they had lunch. After lunch Mary, Jane and Helen went to the woods to pick flowers. James and George started a game of chess. While the men were playing chess Peter was having a nap.

Ai five o'clock they had tea and at six they started on their way back. Everyone felt a little tired but happy.

Mr. and Mrs. Nelson thanked the Bobrovs for a most enjoyable picnic. They were leaving for Leningrad by a late night train that day.
