9. It’s interesting to know.

• Over 20,000 British people are fishermen.

  • Great Britain gets all the oil it needs from the North Sea.

  • No town in Britain is more than 80 miles from the sea.

  • Britain is mainly a Christian country — one British in ten is a member of the Roman Catholic Church and there are 1,7 million members of the Anglican church, the "established church", that is the church legally recognized as the official church of the state.

  • The British don't shake hands with each other nearly as often as Ukrainians. It is only usual when you first meet somebody or haven't met for a long time. Young people often say "Hi", or "Hello".

• "How do you do?" is not a question. It is a formal way to say "Hello".

God save our gracious Queen!

Long live our noble Queen!

M: The UK is a constitutional monarchy. But what does it mean?

S: It means that the Queen is the head of the state. But according to the Constitution,

power in the country belongs to the Parliament. The monarch can only reign with the support of the Parliament. Everything today is done in the Queen's name. Nowadays the head of the country is Queen Elizabeth II.

S: She became a Queen after her father's death in 1952 and was crowned in Westminster Abbey in June 1953. Among Queen Elizabeth's many duties are to make visits to foreign countries. She is more a symbol of the country than a real powerful person. Her Christmas and Easter Greetings on the radio and TV has become traditional. But she never gives interviews.

M: What do you know about her favourite way of spending her free time?

S: The Queen likes to spend time with her six grandchildren. By the way, the number of her children are four. She likes to watch horse-racing, go for a walk and watch comedies and wildlife films on TV.

M: Who is the most famous person in the royal family except the Queen?

S: May be it sounds strange, but till recent times it was her daughter-in-law Diana, the Princess of Wales. Princess Diana was well-known for her charity work. She visited many countries and helped sick and poor people. In 1997, at the age of 36, Diana was killed in a very strange accident.
