Dear Mrs. Gently,

A friend of mine is giving a big party at her home to celebrate her wedding anniversary. My husband and I received an invitation that included this note at the bottom:

"In order to help pay for the food and drinks, you are asked to make a contribution of $10.00 at the door."

Don't you think this is incredibly rude? I think we should refuse the invitation, but my husband says we should go to the party and pay the $10.00. He tells me that Jim (my friend's husband) is out of a job at the moment, so they are really short of money. What do you think?

Puzzled Jane

B) DISCUSS THE ANSWERS IN SMALL GROUPS

  1. Why do you think "Puzzled Jane" is not happy with the invitation?

  2. What is her husband's point of view?

  3. What advice will you give to the author of the letter? What would you do if you were in her place?

C) READ MRS. GENTLY’S ADVICE. THEN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

Dear Puzzled,

In all my many years of dispensing advice on matters of taste and manners,

I have never heard of such a preposterous solution to financial embarrassment. Does your friend think that she's operating a restaurant? The lack of money does not excuse such rudeness. If your friend wants contributions from guests, she should plan an informal potluck dinner. It's perfectly acceptable to ask guests to bring a main dish or salad or dessert to a party. It is truly tasteless to ask for a contribution of money. My advice is simple. You should politely but firmly decline this "invitation."

Mrs. Gently

  1. Does Mrs. Gently agree with Jane or with her husband? Why?

  2. What is a "potluck dinner?"

  3. Do you agree with Mrs. Gently’s advice? Why/why not?

D) SIT IN A SMALL GROUP AND READ THE "DEAR MRS. GENTLY" COLUMN AGAIN. THEN DISCUSS THE MEANINGS OF THE WORDS AND PHRASES BELOW. DECIDE ON A DEFINITION OR A DIFFERENT WAY TO SAY THE SAME THING. SHARE YOUR WORK WITH OTHER GROUPS. USE A DICTIONARY TO HELP YOU IF YOU ARE NOT SURE.

EXERCISE 19. CAN YOU SPEAK REAL ENGLISH?

B) TRANSLATE

The advantage for a language learner of lodging with a real British host family is that he or she will effortlessly acquire what is sometimes called ideal English, a colorful repertoire of idioms, slang, colloquial expressions, and even the occasional taboo word, as used by flesh and blood native speakers. It comes as a surprise to learn that Mrs. Jones is "her indoors'', Mr. Jones is her "other half" and their children are the "nipрers"; that the woman next door is "а pain in the nесk", her son sells "dodgy" mobile phones, while her daughter is "аs nice as pie"; that Mr. Jones likes to go "down the boozer" whenever he has a chance, which is not very often as Mrs. Jones "keeps tabs on him" all the time, maybe because he was a bit of a "Jack the Lad" when he was younger, though he's "knuckled down" now and they "muddle along pretty well together".

EXAMPLE: Now that I'm married, I don't have time for myself anymore. The course of true love never did run smooth.

Sylvia's Story:

Now that I'm married, I don't have time for myself anymore. We used to spend time with each other. Now that we have kids, we never have time for ourselves. We both work, but Frank doesn't help me with housework or with the kids. I have to do everything all by myself. My husband only thinks of himself. When he wants something, like a new digital camera or new software, he buys it. He never buys me flowers or presents anymore. I think that he still loves me, but sometimes I'm not so sure. Sometimes I think the problem is his fault, but sometimes I blame myself.

Frank's Story:

Sylvia never has time for me anymore. We used to do things together. Now I have to do everything by myself. If I want to go to a movie, she says that she's too busy or too tired or that the kids are sick. I rarely go to the movies, and if I do, I go by myself, it seems that all I do is work and pay bills. Other married people seem to enjoy themselves more than we do. She says she wants me to help her with the housework, but she really prefers to do everything herself, because she doesn't like the way I do things. She wants us to see a marriage counselor, but I don't like to tell other people about my problems. I like to solve my problems myself.
